I have built a pentium system , however i have never used AMD. I want to build a new system but i am tight on cash. What would be the best AMD cpu and motherboard combination for around 100 - 150 . There is a AMD XP 1600 on newegg and a mobo combined around 110 . I do not know much about AMD, but that they have some cooling problems. I am wondering are there specific boards that i need to consider ( upgardability ? ) and some ohter cooling stuff. I am not too keen in overclocking , but i have done it before and may do it.

Do you plan on buying some DDR ram or are you going to use SDram? Sdram will hold you back, better to get the DDR.

If you get DDR look at the Athlon XP 1600+ with a Shuttle AK35GT2. The board will have a 5.1ch C-Media sound card and the KT333 chipset. If you dont like that board look at something from Epox with the KT333.

This set up should be under your max cap.
And get a wide body heatsink that cost around $8 dollars, Like cooler master, and you should be fine. The only time you really need to worry about overheating is when you overclock.

Here's my suggestion...a little over the $150 budget, but well worth it IMO.

Motherboard - Epox 8K5A2 (KT333/8235) - $86
CPU - 1600+ XP - $55
HSF - Taisol CGK760092 Copper Insert - $15

Total - $156

This setup will give you stability, and the tools to overclock should you ever choose to. You also get some nice bonuses like USB 2.0, Onboard LAN, and Sound. The board also reads from the Athlon XP's thermal diode. The Taisol HSF is a nice, high performing, and decently quiet HSF that will still perform well if you choose to overclock. :)

i'd advise you to go with the K7S5A+AXP 1600+GC68

that will set you back about 120 with shipping thrown in.

On the AMD Platform, I've had Asus, Abit, MSI, and Epox
and by far and away the Epox was the most troublefree,
well performing board regardless of model or chipset.

They just don't mess up and aren't finicky and in my mind
would be the FIRST choice for a first timer on AMD.

As far as cooling, I have had decent result with the
stock HSF and awesome result with the noisy copper
HSF's

I'd go with something in between like a globalwin mid line hsf
with a fairly low noise threshold.

If you can actually get an Epox 8k5a board in the 80's
like someone quoted, "BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!"

That board would give you a clean upgrade path and lots
of nice new features like usb 2.0 etc

I recommend getting PC2700 ram from whoever's cheapest
out of mushkin, crucial and OZ

The 1600XP at newegg is a nice deal as well.

Moral of the story is, but the Epox board with a decent fan
and you'll be very pleased in that price range......

Newegg has the XP 1700 retail (W/HSF) @ $76 and that is just $21 more and bit more speed or XP 1800 retail @ $87 so if you don't OC then nice deal there;)

Take a look at the Abit NV7-133R, which is based on the nForce 415-D chipset and has integrated USB 2.0, LAN, RAID, and near-audigy level sound for about $90.

seems as though that Epox seems pretty nice , however, i have question about the integrated sound . What is the deal with that ? i have always had external sound cards like SB live . I was actually thinking about getting audigy , however , the Abit NV7-133R recommended by saint seems interesting

You might want to be a bit more specific as to what your question(s) is/are.

in my experience, onboard sound is always less optimal qualitywise to an sblive or audigy.

This is less true in terms of onboard network adaptors, scsi adaptors, or raid adaptors..............

but:

I'd just disable the onboard sound and use an sb. They're not that expensive and yer
really not paying extra for the mobo's sound anyways, since they all seem to have it these
