i tried gaim, miranda im and trillian
trillian interface was a major turnoff for me..
miranda takes up the least amount of memory, and i liked the interface MUCH better. the only thing i found it incapable of was initiating a file transfer to an aim contact. then again, i only have 4 people on my aim contact; most of my friends/family/acquintances are on msn.
gaim looked very sweet, but unfortunately i couldnt get the 2byte language to work right... seeing how they have localized versions, this must be a stupidity on my part.
in the end i settled with miranda IM, no complaints whatshoever.
