Intel e5200 $83
Asus P5KPL $55
Kingston 2x1GB DDR2-800 $24
Powercolor 4830 $85AR

Total: $247AR

About $100 more than the 3850 typically runs IIRC. And you can probably sell your old cpu/mobo/ram for at least $100, especially if it's a socket 939 setup (since AMD quit making those cpus the value has gone up on the X2 models).

That will beat the fastest AGP card made without any of the AGP issues (drivers, smartgart, etc).

why not some 2x2gb corsair xms2 for $20 AR?

Prices have changed since I posted this three months ago you could now probably build it for $200 if you were selective with your choices.

Freezing, monitor going off issues to get it stable at higher overclocks, but that has nothing to do with the chipset.

Hello! could you please post a picture of the heatsink? I want to see how you did it.
And how are the temperatures after the vmod? Do you still use stock cooling?

Thanks a lot, your posts in this forum helped me a lot with modding my CPU! The video card is next - bios vmod ;)

No Probs, sorry I missed this before Your PM.

I modded the GPU to 1.4v by doing a pencil mod, because my card is a powercolor
it has a better cooler to start with, so temps are not a problem, about 70 is the max.
I used 4 small dobs of Sikkaflex (any silicone that sticks, dries, and isn't conductive
should do) to stick it down, put some heatsink paste underneath and then leave some coins on top for weight for 4 hours until the silicone is dry.
I also put some double sided tape underneath around the bridge chip so no short
circuits were possible. As log as the heatsink you use doesnt touch anything other
than the bridge ic core You will be ok.
here is the link to the powercolor mod
http://forums.guru3d.com/showt...d.php?t=250402&page=20

But considering that the powercolor card uses 1.33v as default, You will have to
google for a Sapphire card mod as I doubt the powercolor one would work.
btw, I penciled the resistor instead of soldering one in where there wasn't one to
start with, these things are tiny, the pic is zoomed in heaps.
I also had to measure the resistance at that point (resistor) before pencil modding,
so I could work out what resistance to pencil mod it down to for 1.4v.

What's your power supply?
I have a friend that had a cheaper PSU, his cards worked fine...for the first year...had to go through 2 of them before he gave up and bought a decent PSU.

Thank you, Ileader36... I hope I will have the time to do the mod these days and will keep you up to date.

Just an fyi but it looks like powercolor will be releasing a 46xx card(s) in AGP format, at least according to FUD.

I would be all over this with my P4 3.2E. Who's with me!

Anyone?

Appoppin?

3850 will remain the best AGP videocard, unless they release the 48xx for AGP

you sure about that?
if they only release 4650, then you are correct.

The HD 3850 used there is the 256MB version, and the AGP version comes with 512MB. In the article is not stated but in the charts you see that there's some missing results due to the lack of VRAM.

I've already sent this one back for RMA a year or 2 ago for the same problem. My geforce ti4600 from years and years ago is still working like a champ after laying on the floor and being in 5 different computers. That's what I'm using right now.

Unless I can figure out what is wrong with my card and fix it (bga rework, etc), I need a new video card. What would be my best bet? I don't just want to ebay another x850pro and have it die in a year. I'm not super obsessed with games but good performance would be nice. My main requirement is a card that has lots of ram and vivo capabilities as I use it to pipe movies to my 60" projection. Don't want an entry level card as they tend to suck. I needs to be better than or equal to the x850.

The computer is an Athlon x2 2.5ghz. KV2Extreme Light Mainboard with 2gb of ram.

Any help would be appreciated! Would be willing to buy someone's used card too once I get the money together.

Look at my computer below just close to your computer so get Diamond Viper X1950 if they are still selling as we all know AGP is off the life support few years ago.

Ok so the HD3850 remains the best AGP card, but would it still be worth it to upgrade from say, an HD2400 series? I'm currently running a P4 3.2 with 2 gigs of RAM if that helps.

Yes a HD3850 would overall make a good upgrade from a HD2400.
