Hi All,

Contemplating whether to upgrade from existing Radeon 9700 to an AGP card 6600GT/6800Ultra or ATI 800XL / 850 variant or perhaps replace my K8N Neo2 with the Sapphire Grouper board and a PCIe card. Any recommendations?

The 6800GT seems like the best bang for the buck at the moment, though there aren't any deals for it I see. It beats the X800 in pretty much everything except HL2, and supposedly the nVidia drivers are much better than ATi's. Just my 2 cents.

It heavily depends on how much you want to spend really and when you plan to upgrade next. I personally got an X850XT PE yesterday since I won't be upgrading again for about 2 years.

i disagree. the 6800 is the best bang for buck AGP card IMO. at newegg, the 6800GT is a few bucks cheaper than the X800XL, and the 6800GT is slightly faster

I want to keep cost down; so sticking w an AGP card is probably what i'm going to do; just need to decide which one; the new board + pci-e card is too costly an option right now; plus i'm thinking of doing 3800+ X2 so my current board will do for quite another year + hopefully

thx all - i'll check around for a 6800GT. Any recommendations for memory? I'd like something to replace my kingston with? Ballistix, Redlines, OCZ, Corsair? I want to overclock a bit but nothing extreme; i can run my current ram up to about 220 but would like to do 250. Thx!

plenty. read the memory matrix at the top of the overclocking forum. it proves that you dont need expensive ram. just save your money for something else.

Really? I wasn't aware that the 6800GT has become cheaper than the X800XL.

And I don't think that the 6800GT is faster.

X800XL:
Core: 400Mhz
Mem: 980Mhz

6800GT:
Core: 350Mhz
Mem: 1000Mhz

Wouldn't the 50Mhz faster core make the card faster even though the memory is 20Mhz slower than the 6800GT?

well, arnt you a wealth of mis-information.

6800GT $269

X800XL $278

Also, comparing clock speeds on video cards is like comparing clock speeds on CPU's; you just cant do that. Clock speeds do not determine how "fast" a video card is in terms of gaming performance. Look at some benchmarks...

And just because you have the X800XL doesnt make it better

There was an awesome sale @ shop.ati.com. Got my X850XT just 350 $ flat w/ free shipping. I'm really happy about it, If I got myself a 6800GT @ newegg, I might be ending up paying the same amount...but any cards are all good

The X800XT can be had for $249.99 and it's faster than both the X800XL and the 6800GT. If you want the best of the best than the X850XT PE is hands down the quickest out right now. I've had both a 6800GT@Ultra speeds and an X850XT PE and the latter was faster by a fair amount in all the games I played except for Doom3.

Just look at what your budget is. If you don't want to spend that much than I'd suggest a 6800NU ($165-180 right now). If you won't be upgrdaing for awhile than I'd say go for the X800XT.

thx all! I used to be an Nvidia user but switched to ATI and have been happy to date. I know nvidia used to provide more frequent driver updates but I think ATI is doing a good job now in that area. 800XT would be nice.

I've had both too and I honestly prefer the ATI drivers to the Nvidia stuff. Seems like there is always some bug in the Nvidia drivers that will get fixed "next time".

Also, see this post, killer price.

Then look no further. Here's a retail box Sapphire Radeon X800 XT AGP for $219 with free 2nd day shipping.

Edit - Oops! Looks to be currently on backorder, but is still a good price. Just might have to wait a few days for it to come back in stock again.
