I just looked on Samsung's USA site and the 172w is discontinued. Do you think they're going to release a newer widescreen LCD to replace it? Maybe something with a 1680x1050 resolution. This would allow game playing at 1280x1024 if 1680x1050 wasn't supported by the game. Anyway, I'd love to get a widescreen but the only company that seems to care about widescreen LCD's is Apple and theirs cost way too much IMO. The 172w will only allow game playing at 1024x768 when the native res isn't supported. This is a real low res considering what the latest video cards like the 6800 Ultra can do.

Since I can't find a widescreen LCD that fits my needs I'm considering the 172x or 193p. It kind of sucks that I have to go with a 4:3 screen because companies like Samsung aren't taking the move to widescreen very serious at this time.

I am really interested in this topic so let me know if you find out anything more Aelius. One quick question that I was not able to find out yet... does the Sceptre pivot out of landscape mode?

Doesn't look like they are discontinued yet:

Used SGI 1600sw is my vote for best budget widescreen. I just got one and I love it. The monitor cost me $250 (about the Ebay going rate), but I needed to spend $300 for a special DVI adapter to get it running with my ATI Radeon 9600 pro. That's $550 for a 1600x1024 LCD. I don't know what else you can get for those pixels in that price.

Some older reviews have it as a fine LCD to game with. I haven't gamed with it, but it's a great monitor albeit the pixels may be shad too small for some people.
