best 6600gt agp for UNDER $200

Ok, i was previously gonna get a leadtek, but i wont be able to get the money for it.

So, i can get a Gigabyte brand on newegg for $199 and wondered if it would do well

just to let you know, i need quality, not performance. no OCing for me and if it is overclocked already, i will underclock it to the normal 6600GT agp design (500/900) to save power.

there are also weird brands like Apollo, Rosewill, and a chaintech, but i dont know if those are any good.

Any thoughts? if you have a good deal, put a link

and sorry for me and posting this after someone (including me) has asked a billion times.

Both cards are wonderful (have both, though my Gigabyte runs cooler than the MSI :Q ). Anyways, here's how I will help you:

Since both cards are great, it depends on what you want in the package
1. Gigabyte
Advantages:
- has an awesome copper heatsink but it doesn't cover the mem chips.
- Quality card (the build, everything)
- Don't know about you, but there's something alluring about blue PCBs 😀
- Funny to look at
- Low temps, both idle and load
Disadvantages:
- Weak package... it comes with two really old games "Spellforce"

2. MSI
Advantages:
- Huge copper heatsink covers both gpu and mem chips
- quality (most of the time, I've heard horror stories about HSF's falling off)
- Red PCB
- HUGE PACKAGE! SO MANY GOODIES! PRograms galore man. Games galore too. There's so many (though some are old) that you'll be quite busy)
Disadvantages:
- Funky looking DragonBall Z look-alike on the heatsink...
- A little more expensive than the Gigabyte

Hope this helps you man. I have both so feel free to ask more questions

Does NewEgg list the software that's included with video cards? Thanks a lot for your post. I, too, was wondering about the Gigabyte vs. MSI. I think NewEgg has both for $199 before shiping now.

In regards to the stories about MSI HSF's falling of, I think some of it goes back to the 6600GT round-up back in December, where the test crew were supplied with a MSI card with a loose HSF.
It seems that MSI has replaced, or redesigned, the card a bit, as the pictures posted in the test doesn't look anything like the new MSI 6600GT cards.

As you rightly said, it has a funky looking Dragonballz lookalike pic on the HSF.

k well does anyone have any links to a gigabyte/msi 6600gt agp card review? i'd like that. i also heard that galaxy is good (from guru3d) but i cant find it anywhere.

any more suggestions/ help?

Despite all the bashing, my XFX 6600GT AGP has been excellent since getting it approx. 6 weeks ago. Overclocks to 565/1.14 on auto and hasn't overheated or caused any issues using 67.66's. Games are meh, but then again for sub $200 shipped for retail, I wasn't expecting them to ship it with D3 or FarCry.

Look around the articles on the video section. Its there. Every brand you are interested in is reviewed.

dapunisher, where did you get your XFX video card from??? It came with both Far Cry and Doom 3??? That's a great deal for 200 bucks.

i searched and its really not what i want.

is the gigabyte a good card? do i have a very good chance of it shipping undamaged and not having problems when i put it in?

It doesn't include D3 or FC, he said he was not expecting them to do that. That's why he's not surprised with the games bundle.

I have an MSI 6600GT and I've been really happy with it, it idles at 40s and loads at 60s (eventhough it came mysteriously overclocked at stock at 535/1070). I never had any problem with their HSF, I actually like it because it covers both the GPU and memory chips. Anandtech had a problem with it, but that was probably just one card because nobody on the forum had the same problem. They have a good software bundle too. I don't know about Gigabyte though so I can't recommend one over the other.
Hope that helps.

edit: Here's a good round-up. , the MSI heat temps are different from what I get, that's probably because they got a broken HSF.

Thats PCIx though....i need agp...do you have the agp one?

did it come with a 4pin molex splitter

and what was all the software?

🙂 I know it doesn't usually come with those games, but I was asking WHERE he bought it so I know where to order my grpahics card from next time.

🙂 XFX 6600 gt is by far the best of the 6600's it is an awsome card, I have one and so do 2 of my friends and we love them.

PrayForDeath, how noisy is your MSI card. I recall in the review that it was one of the quietest card. XFX for all of its feature was the noisest. Since MSI has made changes to the HSU, I was wondering if the noise level had remain the same.
