Looking for the fastest most reliable 60G SSD on the market today. I've been seeing alot about the Samsung 830, & Crucial M4.

Do these models vary by sku number? I've seen several and am curios if some use different controllers. I would prefer to have the better controller if so.

Thanks people :)

I'm not sure why some models have different, separate model numbers. Sometimes it's because one is taller than the other (9.5mm vs. 7mm). Other times it might be because one drive has newer firmware; but of course you can upgrade that yourself. I think all the Marvell drives use the same controller hardware.

If you want the best MLC drive, get the Samsung 830. SLC drives are more expensive, slightly hardier, but I see none in the 60G range.

So the one with the Samsung controller is the one in the Anandtech bench mark, right?

Boy that's an awful lot for a 60G drive

60GB tends to have worse $/GB these days. 120 is definitely the sweet spot. The 128GB m4 routinely goes for roughly $100 on sale, while for the 64GB the best I've seen is around $70.

As far as Crucial vs. Samsung: Crucial is usually cheaper and slightly slower, although you probably wouldn't notice the difference in real-life scenarios. Both are considered very reliable. Get whichever is cheaper, IMO.

Both statements are pretty accurate. Unless you're fine with a SandForce based drive you're unlikely to get a decent speed ~60GB SSD for less than $65 or so.

Last week, Staples had the SanDisk Extreme (SandForce 2nd-gen controller, with SanDisk Toggle NAND) drives on sale. The 64GB one was ~$55.

Fast, reliable, cheap. Which two do you want?

Fast and reliable: Samsung 830 64GB $110
Reliable and cheap: Crucial M4 64GB $71
Fast and cheap: Corsair Force GT 60GB $65 AR

This thread is getting sexier and sexier by the minute! daaaaaang! haha :D

Thank you all for the great suggestions and help. Some of you know me around here and you know I usually don't post about SSD drives b/c I've really not followed them since a year or so and I thank you again for helping me narrow it down to a few choices :)

Or fast, reliable, cheap and high capacity: Crucial m4 128GB $90

You're welcome :)

The Crucial M4 certainly isn't in the top tier of performance like an SFF-2281 or Samsung 830 is though. So while it is fast in an absolute sense, calling it fast in comparison to those two drives is quite right. Not to say that a pretty damn good 128GB drive for $90 is a bad deal.

That is true. For instance the Crucial M4 model numbers ending in 1=7mm, 2=9.5mm. There are also different numbers for "kits" that come with cloning software and a USB adapter, or kits that come with a 3.5" adapter.

If you want the best MLC drive, get the Samsung 830.

I'd rather get double the capacity for $25 less. Just sayin'.

Not top tier for sure but when compared to the M4 64GB, it definitely deserves to be called fast: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/426?vs=425
