Best 4870X2 I've seen

One thing I'd like to see is what the difference is in system temperatures (CPU temps also), comparing the reference HD4870X2 cooler which exhausts the warm air out of the system, and the non-reference HD4870X2 cooler which dumps the warm air into the system.

While the non-reference HD4870X2 cooler may keep the video card cooler and run quieter, overall system noise might increase if you need to run system or CPU fans faster to keep system and/or CPU temperatures down.

But as you said, it's definetly a great cooling design nonetheless for the HD4870X2...

FYI ? the same card is tested here:

http://techreport.com/articles.x/16229/3

They also tested other ATi cards with custom coolers, including the 4850 X2.

Palit?s card is an absolute behemoth to be sure. It dwarfs the already massive reference 4870 X2.

As for Firingsquad, it?s good to see them using 8xAA prolifically. Seeing only 4xAA scores everywhere is rather tiresome these days.

And they said Xbox was hueg.

Palit likes custom coolers it seems. I have a Palit 9600GT with a big chunk of a cooler, which works very well. Fan spins very slowly, yet the GPU temperature has a hard time breaking 50C even in summer.

Unacceptable design IMO. These GPU's run HOT and the heat should ALWAYS be discharged from the case NOT recirculated around making the case temp go way up! These (GPU) are not chips from 1999 where it was commonplace to have a recirculating cooler AND these cards have TWO of them! :Q

I prefer recirc coolers. Once I have that heat away from the GPU it's fairly easy to extract it from the case. Advantage for bottom PSU cases though
