Newegg has lots of choices. What's the best manufacturer for 5400rpm 40gb hard drive? Thanks!

I'm looking for one at the moment also. I think I'm going to go with the Samsung MP0402H for $70 shipped at ZZF and ChiefValue. I've had consistently bad experiences with IBM/Hitachi (this Hitachi I'm replacing is the 5th IBM/Hitachi that's gone bad on me).

Damn good drives. Im partial to toshiba and now samsung drives. Hitachi drives are okay, but I dont recomend them for someone that is constantly on the go with their notebook.

Why is this question still being asked, you go on newegg, you find the Toshiba HDD at the same if not lower price than other 40 GB hdd's and it has 8 MB of extra cache it's a simple choice, I picked the Toshiba 16 MB 40 GB 5400RPM a long time ago for my Thinkpad R50e, a while after that I saw laptoplogic's review and I knew I made the right choice.

Just an update, I installed my new Samsung HDD today and it rocks so far. I'm surprised how quiet it is and it seems much faster than my previous hard drive (Hitachi 40GB 5400RPM). The build quality also seems better (made in Korea vs. made in the Phillipines)

If I am not mistaken, I think the 40GB Toshiba has 8MB of cache rather than the 16MB of the 100GB drive.

There is also a review of the Seagate 160GB 5400.3 drive, which includes the results from all the other drive tests as well.

I really want to test out the new Samsung's & WD 120GB (to see if WD improved their WD800VE, that thing SUCKED) but I'm so swamped its not funny. I think we're just going to arrange a new HDD test bed with SATA to test those puppies out, my T42 is getting a little antiquated....:Q
