Its not just a memory footprint problem.

AVG 8 is a CPU hog as well, and really slows the system down, even with 2GB of RAM.
With AVG 8 I was sometimes getting thermal throttled due to its high CPU usage at IDLE.
Switched to Avast and the CPU runs about 20C cooler.

I prefer avast here. Home version registration is free and it doesn't nag about anything. I've set it to automatically download and install updates without notifying me about anything, it only tells if an update requires restart which is rare.

It is nice to look at nagging popup if Avira is trying to notify/alert of any serious virus attacks.

Illegal? no. Against their terms of service? Yes

There is a difference.

I switched from AVG 7.5 Free to Avast Home Free yesterday and I'm liking it. I like the user interface and the less intrusive updates. Seems to scan URLs I click on and also P2P protection FWIW. Still trying it out, but so far it's an upgrade.

Not sure about Avast's re-registering every 6 months deal.
