Best 2nd HDD for ~ 2-300 dollars? Already have Raptor 74HDD as primary

Looking for speed over storage capacity, typically dont clutter HDD much, what would be the fastest HDD to buy?

A second Raptor still or one of the newer Sata II drives?

Think of it as being for speed only to be honest.

It wil ljust store demos, 2nd tier games and other stuff so speed is key

Reliability, size, etc not as important ...

What is now the top speed HDD? 🙂

just because it says it's SATA II doesn't make it any faster. The hard drives are still limited more mechanically than by the bus they use. Look for a drive that supports NCQ. Try finding some reviews and benchmarks of drives.

Thank you I'm well aware that just because it says SATA2 doesnt mean its faster, but in anand's review many of the SATA2 beat out the Raptor in game loading times and such, but unless I missed it there was no clear winner... which I what I'm looking for, one that stands out above the rest in most areas, like the Raptor does now

the raptor is the fastest consumer level hard drive, and will be until they come out with other 10,000RPM hard drives.

If it is SATAII it will have NCQ.

RAID 0 gives basically zero benefits to raptors. A few percent at most.

And if one drive dies, you lose ALL your precious data.

Why do you need a raptor for demos and 2nd tier games? A 7200rpm seagate/wd seems like a better choice.

If bytop speed you mean highest rpm, the Raptor (10,000rpm) is the fastest conventional drive, unless you go upto scsi drives ( upto 15000rpm)

Why a better choice if it's slower? I believe in putting in the best or the practical best in my machines and I have not regretted doing so personally.

Right now I'm on a:

X2 4400+ @ 2.5ghz
2 gigs Mushkin DDR400
DFL Lanpatry SLI-DR
BFG 7800GTX
Raptor 74
Audigy 2 ZS
NEC 3540a

2005FPW
Antec P180
Logitech Z-680

essentially I want to contiue in the same spirit.

Super fast hardware is a blast for me, I enjoy it simply because it is fast 🙂

If you want speed (the fastest hd) then get a Fuj. 15k rpm hd. a scsi card will only cost you about $40... ie LSI160

IE, I'm rich and/or a consumer whore and care less about value over performance.

Go buy the drive at Best Buy while you're at it.

Go to hell.

I'm a student with a job I work hard at which pays well and I earn every penny I put into this machine. Although there is no need I already explained why I have what I do and your criticism is irrelevant and idiotic. Get off my thread.

To everyone else thank you for your suggestions.

Maxtor Maxline III is definately (one of the) fastest 7200RPM drives, as well as the hitachi drive with a 16MB cache. I understand that you want performance, but if you read into many of the threads there have beenhorror stories of Maxtors and Hitachis and IBM drives having a premature death.

Sure, go for the top performer, but please make SURE that the drive gets sufficient cooling (more performance generally means more heat), and that you do regular backups.

If you follow these guidelines, and if you care about performance over reliability, then yep I can recommend the Maxtor Maxline III.

Why is everyone recommending the Seagate? Reliability. Hmm..... why go with a (just a random example) $120k BMW 760Li when you can get a better performing (again, just a completely arbitrary example) Ferrari for the same price (I reiterate, a random example). Sure, the ferrari will definately perform better. But if you're looking for a long lasting car.....ha,ha,ha good luck with the Ferrari.

It seems as though you're a performance freak (which is a good thing 😉), so I recommend the Maxtor Maxline III provided you do backups and know the risks of running such a drive.
^-- Now I'm not saying that ALL of these drives fail, it's just a generally accepted consnsus that they have a higher failure rate than other drives (Seagate/Western Digital for example).

For some information (precautions I guess)

$200-300 could buy a gigabyte ram drive with 2GB ram in a couple of months. That is performance over capacity for sure.

Haha. I have to agree 😉. OMGWTFLOLBBQ amazing performer. But I'd wait for them to iron out the possible problems on this RAMDISK before you buy it (don't be the guinea pig).

Ramdisk: $80
$220 worth of RAM'll give you 2.5GB + insane performance.
