Best 27" to 30" gaming monitor?

Howdy,

I'm looking to purchase a monitor for gaming, with some professional graphics work and video being a close second on the priority list. I have a dual Geforce 670 SLI configuration already, so I have the horsepower for it. I'm having trouble finding a definitive list of the top three to five gaming monitors out there at the 27"+ sizes. I don't want something that's 1920x1xxx in a 27" or higher form factor. It needs to have a horizontal resolution at least in the mid-2000s.

Anyone know where to look for this information? I've not had much luck.

Gaming and pro graphics are not compatible with each other.

Gaming = fast display
Pro graphics = accurate display.

Which do you want? You can compromise, but then you aren't getting the "best".

Do you have a preference of glossy or matte display?

As I said before, gaming was the priority, with graphics being the second. Hence, the speed is more important than the accuracy. You still have to do have at least fair darks and moderately accurate color reproduction for ANY good screen though.

As for all the factors to consider, I tend to put a high value on lots of pixels.

Normally I'd say go for 1600p, but due to the recent great deals on 1440p, that seems to be the sweet spot for getting the most pixels for the best price (for example, would you want one 1600p display or three 1440p displays in surround/eyefinity setup?).

I focus on this factor because it's nice for gaming, and very helpful for productivity since you can fit so many windows in there.

But what about other factors like TN vs IPS technology, where speed is better on one but color/viewing angle is better on the other... hard to make that call because it's possible to really enjoy gaming with enhanced colors of IPS, it's still fast but not if you are a competitive/professional gamer or so I've heard?

Also make sure you get a fast response time. If your main priority is gaming then you want a response time of 2ms. If I had to buy one I would look at the ASUS VE278Q. Best gaming monitor I ever used was the Asus VG278, but it really depends on what you want. Faster response or better image quality. TN panels are faster, especially the 120hz models. IPS panels look better but won't be that smooth for FPS games. if you go to a 1920x1440 res, you will encounter lower FPS and video ram limitations on the 670's. Don't be deluded about this. Expect it. For the BEST gaming performance, a 120hz, 1920x1080 monitor is the best for that purpose alone despite image quality shortcomings (still looks great though).

A Catleap 27 inch "2B" model. IPS, 1440p, 100hz-120hz (limit of 100 hz on SLI).

I've been trying to read up on the Catleap monitors. They sound interesting. As for the suggested Viewsonic... the resolution is WAY to low for that form factor. I already have a 24" 1920x1200 resolution monitor. Any monitor that's 27"+ shouldn't be 1920x1xxx in my opinion and will not be considered.

but will it be any good for gaming? Is the Apple 27" any good for gaming? The Dell UltraSharp U3011 also sounded like a contender, though the lack of portrait mode was a downer (as it is for the Apple)
