Hi

I've just traditionally jumped for Canon and always liked it. But my dad's birthday is coming up and I want to get him a camera...and naturally I thought of getting him one of the SDs in the appropriate price range.

I'm wondering though if there are competing cameras that are "superior" for that rough price range. I'm kind of clueless outside Canon land - but is there anything comparable to a the SD700/600 ?

Thanks :)

Yes there is a better one; it's called the Fuji F31d.

F31D is about the best out there. If you don't mind losing all manual control, the F40 uses SD cards instead of the XD cards.

With all this talk about the F31D, I bought one today! The low light ratings and the super fast face recognition ect., I could not pass!
Thanks for all !
Now what to do with my 2 day old Canon PowerShot A570 IS ?
I guess I`ll keep it!

yea, i faced the some dilemma when considering those 2. F40 has the same size sensor but packs in 2 more mpixels. This has to add more noise and thus reduce image quality. I decided that I can live with xD for the better PQ.

Also the $30 fuji rebate on F31fd helped me sway that way ;)

How does the F31d compare to the Canon Powershot A620 in terms of absolute picture quality?

And does the F20 have same picture quality, just less manual features (?)

The F31d has superior low light ratings and maybe the fastest Face recognition out there. Picture quality is fantastic. I have a A570 si and from what I have read on this forum and other sites, the Fuji is hard to beat. I love my Canon ,but the Fuji rocks.
As for the F20 and F30 , they are both very good and do offer some of the same results as the f31d. The f30 seems to be the Value pick. The difference between the F31 and F30 are minimal.

Check out deanx0r photos from his F30. They are fantastic.

Does your dad take a lot of pictures? Make photo print? If nor you can find 5.0MP for low price If you really like Canon then you should buy another Canon for your dad even if he needs some helps he would like feedback from you.

for those with the F31d

how are the write speeds? Is it laggy? That is what I'm really looking at - whie i haven't seen anything on real world preformance, the theoretical limits of SD are leaps above xD....type H from a wikipedia comparision seems to narrow it a little bit, but I'm curious on real world usage.

So how is the "delay" in writing pictures?
