Best 21" Shaddow Mask Monitor?

I'm looking for a 21" Shaddow mask that has a decently small dot pitch.

Right now I'm looking at the Hitachi CM823FB, but some reviews say that it has some problems with focus around the edges and the appearance of dark verticle lines. Other reviews, however, rate it very high.

Would this be a good choice? What other brands have good shaddow mask monitors?

Hi,
I puchased the CM823FB this past Monday from DELL. Price was $ 760, free shipping (saved $50), minus $50 promotion and minus 10% from a coupon code I snagged from jumpondeals.com. Total price that I paid was $635. Ye Ha!!! Not bad for a monitor that has a 5 year parts and labor warranty. All the reviews that I have read have given this monitor excellent reviews. Even Cadalyst.com gave this monitor an excellent review even though they mentioned a very minor flaw. I can live with that.

UPS is holding it for me to pick up tomorrow.

Hehe, I envy you ahsumdude 🙂

I almost bought that monitor last night at Dell, with similar discounts, I mean I had it all checked out and everything.

Unfortunately, I can't quite aford it yet, so i'm going to wait a few weeks. Hopefully Dell will have similar or better deals then. I thought I would post this topic to make sure this is the right monitor and to explore some more possibilities.

When you get it all set up I would be greatly interested in how it performs for you.

Hi ISAslot,
I can do that. I'm going to pick it up at UPS tomorrow. Dragged it to my office and show it off to my "buds" and then promptly take it home and make love to it. ar... ar...

I'll be an internet gaming fool tomorrow night!

see ya

<< Hitachi stopped making these CRTs, when these are gone, thats it! >>

So both models mentioned will be dropped from your product line? Or would you find another CRT supplier?

I suppose that's not great news should one ever need to have these units serviced either.

It rather sounds like there's a push into Trinitron and LCD technologies, like it or not (not your fault, just a general trend).

There is no other CRT supplier for 21" flat shadow mask CRTs. Conventional shadow mask is not a problem, there are other suppliers for these.

Last year Hitachi announced the closings of their CRT factories, in fact rumors are that Sony and Mitsubishi are also considering closing the CRT factories.

Service is not an issue. Rarely do CRT?s fail. Parts for repair / replacement are available and will be for at least the 5-year warranty period. We have plenty of units in our service stock. Besides our failure rates are so low it typically is not an issue.

:Q

I guess I better not wait too long then.

ahsumdude, did you get your monitor set up? If so, what does the awesome shaddow-masking prowess of Hitachi look like? If you're suddenly really busy playing games and looking at pictures like you never had seen them before, and you forget about this thread, it's okay, I understand. 😀

The viewsonic p225 shadow mask monitor was officially discontinued 2 weeks ago. It has great specs. and hardly any place has these in stock anymore as well. Almost all the top of the line 21" crt are discontinued.

I have a CM823FB (am using it right now) and I love it. I have no image problems at all. I connect a Radeon 8500DV and TV and DVD quality are outstanding. I don't play games much, so can't help you there. I really can't stand the lines in an aperture grill. I got the Hitachi because I've had such incredible longevity out of their TV's. The only downside is this sumbich is big and heavy.
