I'm going to buy a drive for less than $200 based on recommendations from AT'rs

Obvioulsy after the most space for the least money

Thinking about the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10, has has this performed in the real world

Comments and ideas are always welcome

To asswer your 2 questions.

1) Best $200 IDE drive Seagate 300gb 7200.8 $195 5yr warranty
2) "Obvioulsy after the most space for the least money" Look for deals with rebates such as the Seagate 200gb for $59.99-$69.99

only one HD? If you're gonna spend $200 on hard drives, you'd get the most space if you get 2x 200GB (which will run you a little more than $200). or 2x 160GB, which will be slightly less.
Other than that, I think you'll find there are as many HD manufacturer preferences as there are people on this forum. Personally, I'd go w/ Seagate for their 5yr warranty (actually, I just did... purchased 2 of their 200GB SATA drives) I've also had a lot of luck with Western Digital.

Right now, I'm pretty certain the sweet spot for $/GB is are the 200GB drives.

Yup, big-box store ads in the sunday paper usually have the best HD buys available. You should be able to come up with a pair of substantial drives for well under that amount. Seagate or Hitachi would be my preferences. Maxtor next and WD last.
