Best 20" Black LCDs on the market?

Price range is $1000-$1500 -- noticed Dell has their 20" for sale for $999 right now.

Main uses are all workstation/2D applications, system administration staring at 10 shell sessions for 15 hours a day type of activities.

Any recommendations? Thinking of also couping it with a matrox card.

I've been drooling over the NEC/Mitsubishi models that can be used in landscape or portrait modes. However, they're generally about 50% more $ than for a Dell model and I'm not sure if they're worth it for your application.

Dell's 2000FP is an excellent choice for a 20.1" black LCD. You can usually wait for a good deal on Dell monitors (for example, right now you can get the Dell 2000FP for $849 before tax from Dell Small Business). I use this monitor for mostly 2D work, including several shell sessions (Using SecureCRT) and it is absolutely gorgeous on a DVI card.

Having two, I'll second that. The bezel is a tad wide though, but is not a deal-killer.

SB sold them for $759 with stackable 20 and 5% coupons not long ago.

I have the 2000FP also. I would not get it again. It has a native resolution of 1600x1200. Vid cards cant run fast enough to run at that resolution. I dont think it scales well either. I'd prefer to have a 19" now with a resolution that a vid card could handle.

What do you mean by doesn't scale well? Do you just mean operating at different resolutions? I am looking at getting an LCD and the 2000FP is one of the ones I am looking at. The fixed resolution doesn't bother me so much since my previous upgrade was a P4 3.06 and 9700 Pro among other things. So I should be able to run most stuff at 1600x1200 I am hoping. But assuming that resolution wasn't an issue how did you like it?

My old roomamte has a Sony LCD and I found that when not runing in his native resolution it looked better. For this monitor I find I have to go all the way to 1024 not 1280 before I dont spend all my time thinking "this is SO fuzzy!)

i've got the dell 20 lcd - it's a fine monitor - nothing even close to it for the price.

wifey has a samsung lcd (17") dang that thing is bright! but for the price of the equivalent samsung 20" lcd i could get two dell 20 inchers!

the dell is great - it dosen't have the "highest" contrast ratio, it doesn't have the "brightest" lcd screen around - but for <$1000 it is unbeatable -

you will be very happy with it. razor sharp image, plenty of contrast, plenty of brightness.

i might have to get a second one!
