I'm looking to spend about $50 or less on some speakers to be used primarily for music. Suggestions on speakers and places to buy them would be greatly appreciated.

I like my Altec Lansing ATP-3 from OfficeMax. I got them over a year ago with a pricematch to someone that brought the price down to like $25. There's often sales and coupons to use for these as well.

I play a lot of games with them and they sound great. My wife plays MP3s all the time, usually turning up the sound pretty loud while she works in a different room. The quality and volume are impressive from these little speakers.

Yeah, the ATP series are probably the best in this price range now. compgeeks.com have some refurbs for $40. and newegg still carries them new in both black and beige. But you might also want to consider the Guillemot 2.0 speakers on compgees with a separate subwoof...
. OTOH, you may want to consider the Video Logic 5.1 system on compgeeks. These were selling in the $200. range a few years ago and had good reviews (I think you can still find a review on AT). You can use just the 2.1 part and save the rest for when you might want to use it. You will need some 3.5mm (1/8") stereo to RCA cables to use these with computer as the system has all RCA audio inputs.
. Be aware that compgeeks has outrageous shipping charges. Ground is $15. on the Guillemot, $22 on the Video Logic!
.bh.

Office Max has the ATP3 on sale for $49.95 + $5. shipping + sales tax if OM has a store in your state. Great buy! wh

Another vote for Altec Lansing ATP3. I've built many computers with speakers around $50 range and ATP3 sounds better than anything else.

If you're really really lucky, you might find the Telex EV/Sonic XS 2.1's sitting unlabeled somewhere
at a CompUSA.
They had them at $39 -- or $49? -- for a while. (msrp was/is $199)
If you saw them sitting around, you'd either think "...that box is so huge, they must be $300" -- or --
"...wow, what a weird looking box... those can't be any good"

While they were being reported OOS in the hot-deals forum, there were 2 sets at my local CUSA
that went untouched for months -- while "their system" said OOS, they were definately there (unlabeled).
I bought one set, and I have yet to hear anything better.
Only downside: they are quite large for PC speakers, so they'll take up plenty of desk space.

ive really been wanting to get the ev sonicxs speakers, but they keep selling out :( and on ebay they're grossly overpriced with the high shipping people normally charged.
