Right now there is NO LCD that beats a CRT for gaming. NONE!
Go to a BIG tournament and you will be surprised to see any of the top players using a LCD. CRTs will always have a better picture then ANY LCD. It will take a new technology to surpass the image quality of a GOOD CRT. And PolyLED looks like the only tech that will match the clarity and speed of a CRT yet the depth of a LCD.
As far as current CRTs go, there are not as many left as there where a few years ago to pick from. From the ones currently on the market I'd say for the price that the one to beat would be the 19" NEC/Mitsubishi DP930. Dell normally has these for around $300. Other then that IF YOU ARE LUCKY you can spend $200 more on a good Sony GDMF520 21" display. But since these monitors are long gone, GL with finding one.
CRT = Picture Quality and Speed
LCD = Portability and Desktop Real-Estate, yet most people use them to be hip/geek/in crowed/to say they have one
Pick which ever is more important to you. I have both a CRT Mitsubishi DP930 for home and a LCD Hitachi CML175B for when I travel. If I had to give up one, it would be the LCD hands down. Because it doesn't have as true colors as the CRT 'not great for graphic art', the speed and clarity. Plus the DP930 has a cool feature that will bump up or reduce the CRTs brightness with a single push of a button that is on the front of the CRT. This making games brighter or darker. This is a plus for games like BF1942 where you can not adjust the in game brightness levels.
