Best 19" Monitor under $600

1. Sony G400 ~$560
2. Mitsubishi DiamondPro 900u ~$560

Heck, for like $100 more, you can almost get a KDS 21"!

Just because something costs more doesn't mean it's better. The Sony G400 lacks BNC inputs, the Mitsubishi has lousy input bandwidth.

I would get with a Viewsonic PF795 (~$500) as the first choice, followed by the Samsung 900NF (~$440) if you are looking to spend a little less.

I throw in another vote for the Samsung 900NF. Great feature set (BNC inputs, high res, flat screen, aperature grille), for a great cost. Plus from my experience Samsung makes great monitors.

KarlHungus: Its you again, do you work for or related to ViewSonic by any chance? 'cause I dont understand why you recommending such crappy products. Since when does Mitsubishi have lousy input bandwidth? Oh no BNC, big deal! There is no way an PF795 comes even close to G400 and 900u. Copycats can never do better than the inventor. I pick the Samsung over ViewSh*t anyday, same res, same refresh rate, same tube, with BNC(big deal), and a much lower price tag. But the two I listed are by far the best in the market. Im not that stupid to recommend it just because they cost more, jesus christ, gimme a break already.

andrey: Yes we do, since it's from last century, I assume that you must have been hearing about this the whole century long, tell us, what is your wise choice?

Really copycats can never do better than the creator? Hitachi created 19" monitors and they are the best but they are very good. Copy cats can do BETTER. The 900nf is probobly the best mitsu tube monitor because it dosent have all the defects and problems mitsu monitors have.

Uh huh? I heard that all Mitsubishi tubes suffer the same problem. 900NF is no exception. Hey, I like Samsung products, I've personally led more than 10 people into purchasing the 900NF, it sure beats the hell out of ViewSh*t. Still, it doesnt match the original Mitsubishi.

LXi-

Nope, I do not work for Viewsonic. Why do you think Viewsonic makes crappy products? Do you work for Sony? The F400 was a great monitor, but the G400 just isn't that good for the price.

Here are the stats for the monitors:

G400 -
AG pitch - .24-.25mm
bandwidth - not released
max. res. - 1800x1440@70Hz
inputs - 2 D-sub

900u -
AG pitch - .25-.27mm
bandwidth - 150MHz
max. res. - 1600x1200@75Hz
inputs - BNC/D-sub

PF795 -
AG pitch - .25-.27mm
bandwidth - 260MHz
max. res. - 1920x1440@73Hz
inputs - BNC/D-sub

900NF -
AG pitch - .25mm
bandwidth - 240MHz
max. res. - 1800x1440@72Hz
inputs - BNC/D-sub

Please sell me on either of the first 2 monitors. For the price they're asking they should completely outclass the Samsung and the Viewsonic (hint - they don't).

You can quote monitor specs all day, but what it really comes down to is how good does the output image looks ... isn't it?

I personally have Sony GDM-F400R (FD Trinitron). It was a little pricey, but very well worth it! I simply love it and so far I haven't seen a monitor which can even compare to it in visual quality.

You judge everything base on specs. Tell me, do sports games play on paper? I didnt think so. The fact is, most users do not tend to use resolutions any higher then 1600x1200, because the text will become way too small to be readable, PLUS THE FACT that today's video cards are totally unable to generate playable frame rates at such high speed. A 19" is best ran in either 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, now dont give me those CAD crap, because 90% of the PC users are not CAD designers, you add all those together, those high res are just meaningless. I do look at specs for reference, but I always take a look at the monitor with my own eyes before making any conclusions. The PF795, while very impressive on paper, does not reflect a thing about its actual performance. I was in Fry's and the PF795 and Mitsubishi DiamondPlus 91 was side by side, I was like, how great, a rare chance to see how the ViewSonics compare to the Mitsubishi. The first thing I notice is the color, the ViewSonic doesnt seem to be as bright and as colorful as the DiamondPlus, I tried adjusting both to best suit my eyes, running 1280x1024@85Hz both using GeForce card, ran a few apps, played Unreal Tourny. The DiamondPlus was impressive all around, the ViewSonic on the other hand looks very decent, but doesnt match Mitsubishi. I liked Mitsubishi's controls better, clear easy to use menu, lots of options to tweak around with. ViewSonic on the other hand has that custom made menu that doesnt work quite effectively as Mitsubishi's. Overall, the DiamondPlus 91 just seem to be a better monitor to me, the text were clearer, the colors looks more natural, and the image seems sharper. It cost around $450. The DiamondPro 900u has similar specs but cost a lot more, I dont know the reason behind this but I just want to get my point across about specs not being everything. I havent seen the Samsung yet, Im sure its good but I doubt it'd be better than Mitsubishi's. However, the 900NF's max res is 1920x1440@73Hz, same as PF790. While Im not denying the PF790 is a decent monitor, it's just a copycat not worth getting, even with such nice tube and impressive spec they couldnt manage to beat Mitsubishi. They'd be nowhere without Mitsubishi's tubes because their shadow mask monitor line is a disaster to look at. Of course, you dont have to trust me, it's just my opinion because I saw them with my own eyes, your eyes might tell you differently. The thing is paper specs doesnt mean anything. Same with the Sonys.

Does anyone have a link to 19" monitor comparisons? Reading a review of a single monitor is usually pretty useless IMHO because the reviewer is only looking at one screen. I have heard great things about the Sony, but this is to be expected as Sony has tremendous brand recognition when it comes to display equipment. Their displays definitely look great, too, but when you buy a Sony, you are paying for the brand as well as the monitor. I currently have a Samsung 900SL and love it, but I know there are higher quality monitors out there. I'm building a system for my brother in law and would love to hear more discussion about the different monitors.

No offense, but I sure as hell don't trust you. The only thing you've made eveident in these threads is your hatred for Viewsonic and KDS (apparently just because the companies aren't huge). I suppose if Viewsonic started making toasters or microwaves you would trust them...

TheBeast -

Here's an older 19" monitor roundup. LXi probably won't like it because it's done by an online CAD site. http://www.cadalyst.com/reviews/hardware/999monitors/

Sorry buddy, same thing can be said about you, what is it that makes you hate the originator in to the bones? I hate them because they're copycats that are uncapable of producing their products by themselves, instead taking all the credit away from the originator. Sorry to say, ViewSonic isnt as good as you think they are.

I don't hate Mitsubishi or Sony. In fact I would say the Sony F400 is the best 19" monitor in recent history, but unfortunately it has been discontinued. The fact remains that you pay extra for the name, and nothing else in some cases, with those 2 brands.

Have you seen these monitors in person? Or do you truely believe that the games play on paper?

Yes, I have seen most of them in person. I usually dislike checking them out in chain stores because you never know what in the hell video card is driving them. In my old position I was able to test some of the monitors coming into the office, but alas I don't have that opportunity now. 🙁

LXi: Pulls his info out of his a$$. The samsung 900nf is better than the mitsu 900u and it is far cheaper. Ctx's FD trinitron has a .24 dot pitch, BNC and d-sub, and is priced at about 430 dollars. Its gotten GREAT reviews by many magazines. The ctx is superior to the sony g400 and cheaper. It support 1600x1200 at 87 or 89hz I forget which one. The fact is mitsu and sony monitors are over priced and both have bad warrenties compared to other companies. Viewsonic makes good products as does kds, samsung, ctx, hitachi, and mag.

Ok, it just seem to me that you like ViewSonic and KDS just as much as I like Sony and Mitsubishi. I like to give you back the favor, in many of the threads like this, you've also been evident about the preference of ViewSonic/KDS/Samsung as well as hatred towards Sony and Mitsu. Sure you said you dont hate them, I also said that I dont hate them. It just seems to me the bigger brands are better, and it seems to you that the smaller brands are better. I dont believe in paper specs, and it is to my experience that many other people also preferred the bigger brands because they look nicer and have a peace in mind.

Heh... I guess we should go to Vegas, rent a hotel space, debate in front of the crowd and make some money that way. j/k 😀

Right...

You were just calling Viewsonic ViewSh*t, and suggesting KDS uses defective tubes to cut costs (another thread) because you liked them sooo much. If Sony and Mitsubishi priced their products like the rest of the industry I would consider them.
