What is the best 19" CRT out there? Like everyone, I'm looking for cheap prices. My computer comes with a Viewsonic E90FB, but I can get a different one. Right now, PC World rates the Viewsonic GS790 as the best out there. It's a little expensive though. Are there any better?

I've heard good things about the Samsung 900NF, and its specs sure look good on paper (er, well, I looked the specs up on the web, so does that make it "monitor"?). ;)

Anyhow, it's probably what I'll be getting later this year unless somebody says otherwise. (gotta replace that 7 year old iiyama 17 incher that's got a little fuzzy image problem)

I have a Samsung 900NF and think it's a great monitor. It will do 1600X1200 @85Hrz, too bad my eyes can't.

pc world is not even a reliable place to go to when deciding upon a monitor. The viewsonic GS790 is so outdated that it's specs aren't even good. The bandwidth is only 150 which is pretty low now. This monitor was a good model when I bought it back a few years ago.

The viewsonic G90f is a better model and can be found for around the same price or less as the gs790. I don't know how much you saw the gs790 priced at, but the average price I found the gs790 for is $253 which isn't expensive at all. The viewsonic p95f plus monitor which can be purchased for $316 is what I consider an averaged price 19" monitor. The samsung 900nf all these other members suggested is much better than the gs790, g90f and even probably the p95f plus model but might not be better than the p95f original series.

Sony CPD-G420. Great colours, razor sharp text and a prefectly flat screen.

I find that 19" crt monitors on the whole tend to have rather CRAPPY geometry. I have tested just about every flat tube monitor out there and some have pretty good geometry (sony f400) and some have some rather crappy geometry (low end samsungs and viewsonics). I made the switch to LCD recently and haven't looked back.

Perfect geometry, razor sharp text, 25ms response time and no noticeable blur whatsoever. Sure it costs a little extra, but it was well spent.

At this point in time i actually would recommend a CRT monitor over an LCD though. Newer technologies are on the horizon that will lower the response times of LCD's to achieve much better gaming performance. I say get yourself a Sony G400, F400, or G420 ( all had excellent geometry, color, and clarity). I found Samsung monitors to be rather inconsistent with one monitor performing better than the other or far worse than the other.

All of these monitors can now be had for under $400 easily, with some coming down to $200 and below. So to sum it up, get a sony.

Another vote for the 900NF, it is a top class monitor. Have run mine all the way up to 2048x1536@60Hz - amazing stuff for a 19". Not that you would WANT to run it that high but Quake 3 certainly looked very nice!
