Dell 2001FP. The 8-bit S-IPS panel will deliver wide viewing angles and great color. You can probably find it under $500. I'm not sure of Dell's deals and everything.

not so fast. The samsung 213t is a superior product in many ways to the dell. New 214t is above your price but you can find the 213t for that amount.

I have used the Samsung 213T on numerous occasions and I don't think it is that great of a panel at all..

Aside from widescreen, I think my 2005fpw is better.

just look at anadtech's own comparison of the two. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=1974&p=1

213t IS a bigger than 20" screen - it is 21.3 inches.

2005fpw is a very different sort of display. It's not comparable, but I have both, and I disagree, in any event.

You said "for photos" is the usage - I don't think you will find better than the samsung for this type of purpose - graphical/pro work.

Would people still say that the 214t is the way to go? I'm wary of the widescreens and think that this size would be sufficient for my needs ... also, is there anything bigger of similar quality that isn't widescreen?

The NECs LCD2080UXi and 2180UXi are good in this department. NEC will present their successors, e.g. the 2090UXi at CeBit though. They will be faster and have a bit better blacks. Also an internal 12 bit LUT (look-up table). Not really cheap however.
