Whats the best AIB 1070? As in who has the best cooler i guess is what it comes down to. Wouldn't mind a 3 slot for quieter cooling as wont be going SLI this time around anyways.

MSI Gaming 1070 in the US seems to be a very good card in terms of noise levels and temps. Worldwide, the Palit cards are excellent.

I am also assuming the PC in your sig hasn't been updated? Because otherwise, there is no way you should be buying a GTX1070 for a Nehalem i7. The CPU bottleneck will be out of this world. Your CPU isn't even fast enough for a GTX980/R9 390/290X level GPU.

Asus messed up the cooler design like the last gen's ACX. Only 2.5 out of 5 (!) heatpipes are touching the GPU core.

Asus' GPU warranty in North America is known for being horrendous.

The MSI Gaming 1070 also has double ball-bearing fans, something that's missing on the Gigabyte G1 and Asus Strix.

MSI Gaming 1070 is also very quiet.

MSI Gaming 1070 is also 10.98" in length (279mm) vs. 11.73" (298mm) for the Asus Strix 1070.

This could make it easier to resell the MSI Gaming 1070 down the line as it will fit into more cases.

The term "best" is ambiguous in this case because if someone wants the fastest 1070 out of the box but doesn't want to spend $450-460, the $430 Gigabyte G1 1070 is actually a better deal. The difference between the MSI Gaming 1070 and Gaming 1070 X are only clocks. Manual overclocking should result in similar clocks, based on silicon lottery. With Gigabyte, their 3-year warranty starts from the date of manufacture, but for Asus and MSI, it starts from the purchase/invoice date. OTOH, for MSI, they only cover labour for 2 years, instead of 3 years (parts). I also think their RMA requires you to pay shipping both ways but I haven't checked in a while.

Thanks for the info on the ASUS Strix cooler. No clue why they would do that instead of a smooth block of copper that ties all the heatpipes together.

I was going to wait for an AIB 480 (I've loved my AMD cards) as a stopgap (just sold my 780) but unless they turn out to have more OC headroom and cheaper prices than I expect I'll go team green this go around.

I'm also not happy with the multi-monitor power consumption difference between the 480 and 1070, which I'm not too hopeful will be fixed with AIB cards. I'm sold on the MSI, now I just need to find one.

Yet, oddly enough, the Asus is doing well in temps, only 2c off the best in chart you link to. But I agree, doesnt excuse the lousy design. Though have a feeling direct touch even on 2 or 2 1/2 pipes is better than copper plate. Asus would probably have tested that and figured it not worth the added production cost.

It isn't odd when you consider that the low temp is achieved with high RPM fans.

I like it since it has fan headers, so you can connect 2 case fans to the gpu and have the gpu control them. Makes sense since the gpu is the main source of heat in most pc's.

Asus doesn't advertise double ball bearing fans anywhere. Why would they not advertise such a good feature if they had it?

- at that point might as well buy the $620 EVGA 1080 ACX
- none of the AIB 1070 cards run hot. That means the premium for the AIO CLC on the 1070 is a waste of $. You aren't paying for noise either since MSI Gaming 1070 is already near silent

Save your $ and get another 1070.

GPU will be first, one of the fans on one of my 460's bit it. rest of system in few months, by Christmas for sure. Just deciding on CPU now.

Same thing for Gigabyte G1 vs. Gigabyte Xtreme. Also, none of the Gigabyte G1 cards going back to GTX670 had double ball bearing fans. It's consistent with history.

It's actually logical to assume that unless it's mentioned, the card doesn't have it because these firms specifically go out of their way to mention the feature when their product actually has it.

It's also well known that Gigabyte Windforce fans fail over time just like the single ball bearing XFX and Sapphire fans did in the past. Another reason Gigabyte chose to differentiate their Xtreme series from their other cards by putting double ball bearing fans on their most premium line.

The gaming uses TwinFrozr 6 GPU cooler. In Canada the Gaming isn't worth the asking price imho. I've seen Gigabyte 1070 OC for $539.99 and Gigabyte G1 1070 for $569.99.

Right now ALL 1070/1080 cards overclock identically. It's pure silicon lottery. Perhaps the Lightning and Galax HOF change this but there is no reason to pay a premium for any AIB 1070 over the cheapest Gigabyte versions. Gigabyte G1 gaming uses GPU Gauntlet where they supposedly sort the best chips from NV. That makes the Canadian premium on the MSI Gaming X even harder to justify.

The G1 is lacking DBB fans though is it not? since one of my 460's bit it due to fan issues i think im going to go for quality fans this time around.
