Best $100 CPU????

I'm budgeting approx $100 for the next CPU upgrade. It's got to be 939, but thats the only restriction. After skimming newegg, it doesn't seem worthwhile to spend more than the $70-someodd for a 3200 venice...does that seem right?

I've got a very small case (and only 300 watt powersupply) so I will overclock, but I don't intend to push the limits.

I think the 3200+ Venice overclocked nicely to 2.4Ghz (or higher) is the best choice. While there's still plenty of performance in 939, I wouldn't spend a huge amount for a CPU that's ending it's product cycle.

Pick up a proven 3200+ that you know the OC limits off the FS/FT forum for cheap.

I'm running my 3500+ Venice at 2.5ghz without even trying. Using Corsair Value Select RAM as well.

You should be able to pick up a used Opteron 165 for $130 or so.

I would just save up and get the Opteron 165 Dual Core for $155.

If you are on a strict $100 budget, then this is what I would recommend:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 2.4GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

Stock 2.4GHz and then OC that. Should be pretty good for $97.

I agree, and with it's 12x multiplier, you won't even need expensive RAM to overclock it, unlike an Opteron 165.

Also in agreement, the chip will run cool (lack of 1gb cache helps greatly in the heat dept), no need to OC if you do not want to 2.4ghz right out of the box is a very fast procesor

He has a very small case, an OC'ed 3700+ with its 1gb cache will generate a lot of heat that cannot be exhausted

If you're going to go through the hassle of upgrading, go ahead and get some kind of Dual-Core. Have a garage sale, sell some DVDs you're never watching again, pimp yourself out downtown, just get the DC 🙂
