Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a new tablet for kid use, mostly random games and movie playback.

My kids currently use 32GB Nexus 7s (2012) and are fairly happy. They work fine, though sometimes a bit sluggish. Looking for something a bit quicker with a larger screen. Also want to make sure whatever I get has solid cases available since they will likely get handled roughly.

I have these on my short list to check out:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-ico...32gb&cp=1&lp=7

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaTab...vo+32gb+tablet

http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-TF...us+32gb+tablet

I'm not up on current tablets so looking for some advice. Anything stand out on these 3 as bad? Any other models I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance!

Stay away from anything that says mediatek or tegra 3 for the processor. It is the exact same thing you are using in the sluggish nexus 7.

The nexus 9" is probably going to be out in 30 days or less.

I'd stay far away from any of those tablets.

You can get a used Nexus 10 in this price range. Its so much better than those tablets its not even funny. I'd still be using mine today if it wasn't for an accident with mine. With Stock Android, this tablet still feels plenty fast. It also gives you KitKat plus Android L more than likely, with 2GB of Ram, 32GB of storage and a 2560x1600 screen.

Two MediaTeks and a Tegra3... no.

You don't need 32gb, since all of these have microSD slots. What you do need is a nicer screen and decent NAND performance.
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ME302C-A1...dp/B00DXFDI4O/ (dual Clover Trail)
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Yoga-10...dp/B00JAIEAHC/ (quad A7, same as the Mediateks, but higher clocked and better supported)

Upping your budget by $30 will get you a much more powerful device, though
http://www.amazon.com/Asus-TF701T-B1...dp/B00FFF7DAK/ (quad A15)

You can get a used Nexus 10 in this price range.
With the T701 so cheap, going back to 2012 with a dual A15 makes little sense.

Thanks guys! I'd rather not deal with SD cards if I can avoid it. Maybe it was bad luck, but back when I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 I had nothing but problems with SD cards. My first one kept dropping out all the time, so I bought a replacement (googled for a known compatible card) and that worked for a while but then just dropped dead on me maybe 6-8 months later. For the kids I want simple and reliable, and I throw movies on there for them all the time.

That one does look nice, and for $30 more it's worth not having to buy/deal with a memory card with those other models you had listed. I do like ASUS in general.

I knew the Nexus 9 (?) was imminent, but I from what i heard it was going to be out of my price range.

is 8" a good compromise? You can get LG G Pad 8.3 (or Samsung Tab Pro 8.4) for that price range

otherwise, ASUS Transformer Pad TF103C is in your price range - crappy resolution, but it has a decent Bay Trail chip and keyboard

ASUS MeMO Pad™ FHD 10 has a crappier chip, but full 1920x1200 resolution

Maybe... I'll have to check them in person. The kids prefer the size of my old iPad (9.7" I believe) over their 7".

best buy (and the verizon store) should have the G Pad 8.3 (and nexus 7), and the samsung Tab Pro 8.4/Tab S 8.4 available to see

iPad is 4:3 ... i myself prefer 4:3 for web browsing, but most android tablets come out with 16:9/16:10

Be very careful cross match shopping for we may recommend tablets, you get the model number type it into a search engine and the search engine turns up the older models in that series that are 1 to 2 years old that came out last year and are completely different. I am just posting newegg links for it easy to search and they are usually decent with prices it may not be the lowest price out there.

I am trying to recommend a good tablet that is not a POS tablet, but it is hard to get a good 10" in your price range. 10" cost $100 to $150 more than the similar priced 8" to 8.4." If you can do 8" you have a lot more options, and the 8 to 8.4" seems to be the sweet spot. (I personally prefer that size as well but I am trying to get what you want not what I want.)

LG GPad 8.3 (make sure it is the 8.3, the 7.0, 8.0, and 10.0 are all shit), Pretty much the same as the nexus 2013 but with a bigger screen (8.3) and slightly faster cpu. Wonderful tablet with a wonderful screen. The cpu is a snapdragon 600 quad core. Snapdragon 600 and 800s are good 400s are pure shit and the same speed as your tegra 3 (the 400s using a different cpu architecture). This has a 40% bigger screen than your nexus 7 first gen. $250 at newegg.
Newegg LG GPad 8.3 White

Asus TF103 (a 10") HD tablet with the intel quad core and a keyboard dock $250 at newegg currently with a $10 off coupon making it $240
Newegg ASUS TF103 This is effectively the same as the tf100 that came out for windows but with android instead of windows less ram, and a different motherboard so it is cheaper to make for asus.

ASUS ME181C (a 8") HD tablet with the intel quad core. $160 at newegg same as the TF 103 but smaller and no keyboard dock
Newegg ASUS ME181C

Acer is supposed to come out with a similar tablet to the asus tablet 8" with intel quad core but with a 1920x1200 screen and more ram the model number for it will be Acer Iconia Tab 8 A1-840FHD but it is not out yet.

HP S8-7600US, the Slate 8 Pro. An 8" tablet for $199 with the tegra 4 chip (much much much better than the tegra 3, faster than the snapdragon 600 comparable to the 800) with a 1600x1200 screen. It is a 4x3 tablet like the ipad mini. This was a sleeper tablet that came out earlier in the year for it was released at $330 and with no name or marketing. This has received an update to Android 4.4 but who knows if it will get Android 5 / L since HP has a habit of abandoned their products with updates, especially with devices considered a failure and HP did not sell a lot of these. Then again nvidia is good with updates and this is pretty much a nvidia based reference device.
Newegg HP Slate 8 Pro

The tf 701 there were multiple models, I do not remember what the model numbers were the bad ones but the newer model is the good one. The bad ones had some design flaws which I forgot what it was. Effectively the tf 701 is a 10" version of the slate 8 pro with it being more widescreen for those 2 inches.

----

Now I hate waiting but you will probably find better deals and more selection in the next month. Many brands have not released their christmas models yet with a completely new hardware and up to date hardware but they will release it in the next 30 days.

I'll probably be swapping out my iPad Mini and my N7 for an N9

I'd probably go with a LG Gpad. Although only 8.3" it's great for the money. Cheapest I saw it was for $229.

Oh that pisses me off even though it does not affect me. $279.99 on their website, $199.99 on their ebay front.

OP that is what you should buy. And the ebay mention of accidental square trade for $37.99 with no deductible is a good price as well.

This is the cheapest I see the G Pad 8.3 for a new model (not refurb not preowned) and arguably it is the best tablet at $250 price range.

Do not over think this, this is on slickdeals front page.

Thanks again for all the great advice!

I checked out the 8.x" tablets and Best Buy and I think the screen size over the Nexus 7 is substantial enough to keep the kids happy.

The LG looks very tempting and probably the model I would get if it were for myself, but there seems to be other decent tablets for under $200 that might be a better fit for my kids. Remember they only care about basic games and movie playback (ages 5 and 7).

I do want to make sure I get something decent and get the best for my money, but don't want to overspend for their needs. Will they really notice 2GB vs. 1GB? Will they notice a slightly faster processor speed? Or higher resolution?

What they will notice is battery life so that is important to me, and so is reliability - I don't want something with a high failure rate or poor build quality. I'll notice the extra
cash in my pocket if I can keep costs down.... :)

So, if I say 16GB is OK (with an SD slot) and 8.x" screen is good - is the LG still the way to go? What about something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-MeMO-Tabl...pr_product_top

Garbage?

Or this one that I believe someone else mentioned above:
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ME181C-A1...PX0_B00JQ9MYIW

Any other suggestions before I pull the trigger on something?

^ i wouldn't get anything with a Rockchip (which rules out the ME180A)

If you really really want to save money, then sure... but since the $199 LG G Pad 8.3 is within your original price range, and will definitely last longer (updates, CPU/performance wise, and much better resolution), i'd just go with that

The only way to go from the $200 LG deal is *up* to a refurb Tab Pro 8.4. Anything cheaper will be crap.

Thanks guys! I pulled the trigger on 2 of the LGs off eBay, linked through FatWallet to get 2% cash back.

Really appreciate the help and advice!
