Just buy BF2, you get all the expansion packs for free and you don't have to deal with any of the F2P crap.
 
Tribes: Ascend will be F2P once it drops. There are a lot of beta keys floating around right now too, so try and snag yourself one.
 
I saw a package that include Quake, Quake2 and Quake3:Arena for $9.99. I remember paying $70 for Quake2 even after 2 years of availabilty.
