I've noticed that when I pull up in front of stores with doors that open as you walk up to them my Escort goes crazy. What else does it go off on?

banks, motion detetors, security systems, automatic doors.

Then again, my radar rarely goes off unless it is actually a cop.

From what I've heard, those motion sensors those doors use are the same band as police radars.

Edit: spidey beat me to it

Automatic doors like the kind found in malls use radar to sense when someone is in front of the door, so they know when to open. They use the same frequencies as the cops. Radar detectors are very sensitive to it, so they'll go off sometimes from quite a ways away.

Ka band, it WILL be a cop.
K band, most likely a cop or a roadside speed camera thing.
X band, could be anything. If you're out in the middle of nowhere and X band goes off, be suspicious. If it goes off in a part of town where is never used to go off, be suspicious.
Laser, you're just been fvcked my friend.

Are lasers not detectable unless you're within a really close range or something?

What are the ranges of the other ones for a top of the line detector (within reasonable price) like the Escort 8100?

Unless you've got a jammer, then you quickly switch it off while slowing down, leaving a very confused cop in your wake. :D
