Besides GotoMyPC and Webex...what else is out there?

you can configure most VNC clients to use any port you want to use.

not to mention use it with a java client.

Do you have a security concern? You think someone is actually going to pay for an account and install a service on your computer without you knowing? G2 runs in the tray. And you cannot block it.

these products won't work anyway if you don't have them installed on your PC.

I've always wondered how secure these programs are. (UltraVNC, etc.)

I mean, yes, we all know that anyone determined enough will always get through. But leaving like a home system up with Remote Desktop, with just a regular firewall and opening up a port. Is that secure enough?

(Sorry for the noobness question.)

remote desktop, all vnc versions can be accessed through a web browser.

it doesn't matter if it's web or not, the port has to be opened anyway.

there's might still be some confusion as to what I'm actually asking here....

yes, vnc and pcanywhere can be use to remote into a computer...but that's not what I'm talking about...

Since gotomypc is the big thing now a days....I'm just trying to block my users from using a similar service like gotomypc.com.

I've already blocked gotomypc.com and webex.com ip blocks...but I'd like to know if there are other services like this out there...I'm sure there are.

What's scary is that gotomypc.com actually advertises on TV so you know everyone is going to try it. I just don't want my users to punch a whole through my firewall like that. if they need to access corporate pc, we can setup vpn for them.

I guess I need to play with one of these services to see exactly how they work 🙂

Ultr@VNC has an extra port for viewing with a web browser. You hit the address and it loads a java viewer, no installation required.

I've had ultravnc installed for months, but haven't found a real simple configuration walkthrough as of yet. I can put a pc together, but I really have almost no clue when it comes to networking, internet & such.

What uses do you have for this softare? Just curious

you can use it to remotely control a computer on the internet or a network, as you probably know. VNC can be used to access your computer from any other computer on the internet and you can use it to access other machines on your network.

You might actually want to consider setting up gotomypc for them. It can be considerably less of a security risk than setting up a VPN.

I'm semi-biased, but it's really pretty good software. It's especially useful for "remote" tech support (IE helping my mom with her computer) because the configuration/setup on the remote side is practically nonexistant. I could never get remote assistance working correctly, because I was dealing with firewalls on both ends of my connection, but was able to get my mom to install the mypc client in about 5 mins and from then on I can diagnose her problems from anywhere.

hmm, I would think it's more of a security risk to have gotomypc..
