Unlike most opinionated tycoons, his views matter. Nobody on earth has a greater roster of powerful friends. Take politics. David Cameron recently admitted he had no contact with Putin or the Russian government? And Bernie? Why, he is on close personal terms with Putin and the Russian cabinet. They shook hands on an Russian F1 race only last year. At the races there is always a throng of prime ministers and heads of state desperate to talk to him, usually about securing rights to one of the 20 races.

Why did the teams allow Ecclestone to do this? The answer is that the teams were so chaotic and fractious, they knew only Ecclestone could make the sport work.

With Ecclestone they had a business. Without him, just a show for petrolheads.

Ironically, despite F1 being one of the world’s most cutting-edge sports, Ecclestone is not overly tech savvy. For example, he has his closest business contacts on speed dial but instead of using a digital address book, their numbers are printed on a list which is taped to the back of his mobile phone. In a nod to one of his favourite films, Ecclestone had his ring tone changed to Ennio Morricone’s famous theme tune to the ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly’.
