Bermuda Grass: Seeding

My wife and I just bought a new home a week ago. It was a Ryland model home.....other than our roof leak everything is great!

In order to help sell the home, they kept the yard looking green with winter rye grass. There is bermuda grass under it starting to come up as the rye starts to die off. Would it be ok to throw bermuda seeds all over the yard to help strengthen the lawn both in appearance and integrity? I guess what I am asking is it ok to put down bermuda seed on top of already growing bermuda grass? I have some "patchy" places I would like to get grass growing on, but for the most part I just want a thick/lush lawn.

Any tips/tricks?
 
Perfect time of the year if you're in the midwest/east. Just keep it watered every day.

Scotts has a new seed out with built in water retention. It's pricey, but man that stuff works. We had grass growing on our sidewalk 🙂
 
Where do you live that you would WANT Bermuda grass?

Yes, I know many parts of the country can't grow fescue and the other "turf grasses," and Bermuda and St. Augustine are their only viable options.

I spray my lawn every 4 months to stop the Bermuda infestation. Nasty invasive shit...if it was any worse, it'd be called Mexican Grass. (but I think that one's already taken) 😛

pretty much. I'd make sure to cut your current grass down fairly short before doing so.

You better see if they put down a pre-emergent. If so you're seed simply will not germinate. And remember a dry seed is a dead seed.

Yes, but if you want Bermuda grass, you'll want Bermuda seed (the stuff I was talking about is fescue).

Throw some of this down:

Wait a week, then seed and cover the seed with a thin layer of top soil. This stuff kicks ass because it's mixed with peat moss and keeps moist:

Let your grass grow tall to choke off weeds and help it retain water. Use the top setting on your lawn mower. Also, edge your grass. The edging gives a water channel and also keeps weeds from growing out of the exposed soil that meets any pavement.

Throw some of this down every 6-8 weeks, and you should have an excellent lawn for next year:

Yeh and the weed killing part can mess up the seed germination if put out too soon.

Yes, its okay, but it won't do you much good. The seed typically needs to be lightly covered by dirt, full sun, and stay wet. Its better if you just apply light fertilizer to the existing bermuda and help it grow. It will fill in those bare spots no problem.

YOu need to aerate or till the soil else the majority of seeds won't germinate. They need loose soil to anchor their roots. Get some spikes and walk around the yard for a few hours with the wife. It builds your leg muscles and the grass will actually grow.

Overseed a week later. Overseeed two weeks after the first overseed.

I like to seed when I'm anticipating several days of solid rain. Irrigiating grass just seems silly to me since you don't eat it.

Me? I've rehabbed crabgrass lawns and seeded new ones too. I've done it all in terms of grass growing.
