SETI@home Back Online after Firewall Outage

March 18, 2002:
SETI@home users will be happy to hear that they can once again log on to the SETI@home site, send in their processed work units, and download new ones. This was not the case for the better part of this past weekend, when users trying to log on were greeted with error messages and refused access.

The problem was not, in fact, with SETI@home itself, but rather with the Space Science Laboratory (SSL) network in UC Berkeley, where SETI@home headquarters are located. The brand new SSL firewall, designed to keep out intruders and hackers, was rebooting on Saturday afternoon when it encountered a software problem. Instead of completing the booting process, it went into its "safe mode" in which it rejected all attempts by outside users to log onto the system. The firewall stayed in this mode all through Sunday until it was correctly rebooted on Monday morning. Overall, the system was off-line for over 41 hours, between 3:25pm Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, March 16, and 8:50am PST on Monday, March 18.

Although the problem has now been corrected, SETI@home's Matt Lebofsky estimates it will be another 24 hours before the backlog clears out after almost two days of downtime. So please be patient! Things will be back to normal soon.
