Berkeley bandwidth troubles caused by KaZaa?

SETI's bandwidth troubles have finally made it to the school newspaper:

High Network Traffic Proves Difficult for SETI@Home

In the story, the CNS director says, "This increase is attributed to both natural growth of Internet usage and also to the increased use of KaZaa..."

Now, the thing is, the student dorms are on a separate 40Mbps network from the general campus' 70Mbps, which SETI uses. So, what's going on? Are all my professors pirating Beatles songs in their spare time? 😕

So let me see if I understand this correctly:

In the grand scheme of things, it's more important to allow the students/faculty to use programs like Morpheus and KaZaa to illegally share copyrighted materials than it is for the SETI project to perform valid scientific research?!? :Q :Q

Obviously, I'm not the only person who doesn't have their head screwed on straight!

I bet the general campus also has KaZaA using up the bandwidth. It would be very easy upon leaving "work" to startup KaZaA or Morpheus or Audio Galaxy and have them fetch all night long.

<< Naw, they probably downloading Brittany Spears...eeeewwwww. 😛 >>

But if it's video's, just mute and enjoy!

I think they are downloading The Doors and the The Who...

But I agree with NWM. It should be interesting to find out what they do. Maybe they will close that port and really throw people off guard. 😀

How did you know my hard drive was full of Britney Spears videos?:Q😕

Picked this little tidbit from the last link.

<< Recording Industry Ass >>

Are there very many of these??
Bleep
Forgot this part. The profs are downloading Bing Crosby and Al Jolson.

"Longer term we're looking around for other ways, either to try to get a company to donate some network bandwidth or to reorganize the way our software works, instead of having to go through the bottleneck (at UC Berkeley)," he said.

They need a big co to step-up and take over the wu distribution! 🙂

I can believe Kazaa is the problem. I've been on-line 30 minutes this morning, and I've received 23 scans of my port 1214 (Kazaa & Morpheus' port.) That's even more port scanning than Code Red did! They don't have to be transferring music to cause problems; these people are just searching for servers.

...Make that 26. :Q
