BeOS - what is it?

BeOs is suppposed to be a great operating system for editing video and audio, even on lower-powered machines. It has support for multiple CPUs, can be had for free, and will run on good, old-fashioned x86 hardware.

But what exactly is it?

I've seen a short video on its features, but I'd rather get some opinions and thoughts from people who have used it first-hand - the members of Anandtech.

It was a really neat OS about 5 years ago. Now it's basically dead. There are a couple of projects that try to keep it going, but I haven't tried them.

It was developed by former Apple technical guru Jean-Louis Gassee. The history of his role there and his interaction with Jobs is interesting. Gassee was more or less the number one agitator for Apple to retain complete control over the hardware and software of the platform, and this led to a lot of tension toward the end of Jobs' first reign. Gassee did much at Apple, and that's just one aspect of his time there, but he definitely comes off as a sort of arrogant true believer whose moral principles would not be compromised. BeOS was, I think, an attempt on his part to show those at Apple who disagreed with him how right he was. In the end, looks like Jobs was right 🙂.

Well, it seems to me that BeOs is still a reasonable choice for video editing on an old PC. And Haiku (open-source BeOs) looks pretty sweet.

Video editing and old PCs don't go together well unless you're doing really low scale stuff, chances are you'll have a much better time with a copy of iDVD or something.

ALOHA

If it's capable of video editing on cheap-tastic hardware, I honestly don't care. I saw the demo on a dual 233mhz PII-Xeon machine, and it ran very nicely indeed.

Besides, BeOS is now open source. Haiku is the new name. It's buggy, but improving steadily.

BeOS is not open source, Haiku is a complete reimplementation of BeOS under an open source license. Sort of how ReactOS being open source doesn't make automatically Windows open source.

Oops.

However, BeOs 5 is free.
