Re: Your responses to the post ?Which video card for my 21? monitor?. (sorry about not having a direct link to the thread. I don?t know how to do that yet. If you would explain it to me, I?m all ears?err?all eyes.)

I?m a phone call away from a new video card for my Viewsonic P815. Based on all available info, I?ve settled on the ATI Radeon 64mb. Most games I run are D3D, and most other apps are the standard business fare; spreadsheets, charts, internet research, with a heavy emphasis on writing. OS is Win98, and it has been rock solid for me, so I will keep that unless convinced otherwise. These apps are definitely listed in order of ?graphics priority? for my system at home.

BenSkywalker-
If I am correctly interpreting your response in that thread, it appears that your advice would be for me to go ahead with the Radeon. Just want to make sure I?m not missing something. Would you also advise that 64mb is worth having over 32mb ?

Comp10-
Are you also using a 21? monitor at high resolutions, or isn?t screen size/refresh rates really a factor in this decision ? Also, can you expound a bit on your statement that the Radeon has ?great DVD support?. DVD will be new to me, so the raw specs I?ve read don?t help much.

Push me over the edge here. :)
Thanks, I appreciate your input.

"Would you also advise that 64mb is worth having over 32mb?"

Yes, but not because of the added RAM(though that certainly doesn't hurt;)), the 64MB boards are also clocked higher for both the core and the memory, they would be a decent amount faster even if they only had 32MBs. As long as the price difference isn't drastic, I'd say go for it:)

ATi also has hardware DVD support that exceeds any other video card manufacturer, though that is true of all ATi video support. They are simply in a class of their own when it comes to any sort of DVD playback both for the level of aid it offers(less strain on the CPU), to the level of quality of output.(Not trying to step on Comp10's toes, but when I started typing this noone had replied yet and I'm not sure when he will be back on).

To create a link to the thread, right click on the url on that thread, then when typing a post hit the "http" link(without the "s" at the end) and copy the url to the box that pops up. After that you can type in any text you want and it will link you to that site:)

Benskywalker got it right about DVD support :). And yes, I am using a 21 inch monitor and at all resolutions/refresh rates the Radeon gives excellent 2D image quality. However, a word of warning, some people with 21 inch trinitron monitors are having a bit of 2D shimmering in their display while using the Radeon. This is the case with my system, however I cannot notice it unless I get about 6 inches away from the screen. ATI is supposedly hard at work trying to solve this problem. I personaly would still get the Radeon as I do not find the slight flickering a problem at normal viewing distances, and if you don't have a trinitron (or diamondtron) it shouldn't be a problem anyway.

Well, that puts the icing on my cake. I'll take a chance with the shimmering. If my face was six inches away from this 21" screen, my neck would get sore before my eyes would.....it'd be like being at a drive-in movie. :)

Radeon 64 it is.

Appreciate the good responses. Thanks.
