How soon will the Tigerdirect haters come out?🙂

I say just get the Lite on 16x DVD burner at Newegg. The black model has a 10 dollar mail in rebate putting it at 58 if I am remembering correctly.

Here's one vote against TigerDirect! 😉

The BenQ 1620 is having some very good reviews, I certainly wouldn't swap it for a $65.50-10 LiteOn that only does 8x -R and 2.4x +DL

Personally I'd get the NEC 3520 for $64 shipped from Newegg.

I don't own stock in tiger direct, but I did buy a stick of Ultra ram from them in December. Had a 30.00 rebate through Onrebate.com. $30.00 hit my paypal account this week-about a month after submission

I'll second a good experience with OnRebate. No more "lost in mail" checks, fill out forms online, get rebate quick. I think I'll bite on this one.

This is the best +R burner period. Price is pretty good even before the rebate.

EDIT: Shipping is expensive at almost $10 for ground.

Which is better, this drive or the NEC 3520a ?
Benq 1620. Why?

More support from the company with frequent frimware updates (NEC has a large group hacking firmwares because the company support isn't as good). Ability to quality scan your burns, which you can't do in the NEC drive. Utility made for Benq to test your media before burning to determine best burning speed. Automatically bitsets DVD+R/RW/DL to DVD-ROM, greatly improving ability to play in standalones (NEC requires the use of hacked firmware to do this).

Hmmm... Wow. Well I was literally THIS close to sending away for the 3520a when I decided to do one last perusal of the forums just moments ago. Now, I'm going to have to reconsider. I kept hearing so much praise for the 3500a and 3520a, but if I can get a better burner for less money, then that would obviously make much more sense.

😕

Meh, after shipping the 1620 (with rebate) at TigerDirect is only $5 less than the NewEgg 3520a price with shipping.

BenQ has wider range of media support, and if you love cheap media, this drive is for you

Would it have similar abilities as the NEC of being able to burn at higher then rated speeds as I've heard it can do (noted its with specific media). I suppose it balances out in certain ways.

Yes. A large amount of media supports overspeeding in the official company firmware (there are, in fact, no third party firmwares). As we all know, though, different spindles of even the same type of media can vary widely in quality. That's why the test utility comes in handy to recommend best burning speed, despite what firmware allows (say, 4x may be better even though firmware says 8x, and a different spindle of same may be fine at 8x).

By the way, the 3520a is $64 at the moment at newegg, and the NU DDW-163 is $61 (DDW-163 is a Benq 1620).

The one thing that makes this drive even better is it automatically sets the booktype to DVD ROM which makes for better compatibility for your set top dvd player.
This is deff on my shopping list, just not from Tiger Direct !

Benq will burn more medias faster than any other drive. It can burn majority of 8x discs at either 12 or 16x. It also doesn't have riplock so it can rip dvds at the highest speed possible. You have to use hacked firmware with NEC to remove riplock or you rip at like 2x speed.
