More support from the company with frequent frimware updates (NEC has a large group hacking firmwares because the company support isn't as good). Ability to quality scan your burns, which you can't do in the NEC drive. Utility made for Benq to test your media before burning to determine best burning speed. Automatically bitsets DVD+R/RW/DL to DVD-ROM, greatly improving ability to play in standalones (NEC requires the use of hacked firmware to do this).

EDIT: Shipping is expensive at almost $10 for ground.

Hmmm... Wow. Well I was literally THIS close to sending away for the 3520a when I decided to do one last perusal of the forums just moments ago. Now, I'm going to have to reconsider. I kept hearing so much praise for the 3500a and 3520a, but if I can get a better burner for less money, then that would obviously make much more sense.
BenQ has wider range of media support, and if you love cheap media, this drive is for you

Would it have similar abilities as the NEC of being able to burn at higher then rated speeds as I've heard it can do (noted its with specific media). I suppose it balances out in certain ways.
