i picked up one of these on black friday at staples... GREAT drives. and supposedly there's a firmware upgrade in the works to unlock these to burn DL at 4x
YUP I/O Magic at staples for $59.99 after MIR, and lucky, I got the B verssion of the firmware not the G, so I can flash it straight to the newest retail BenQ drive, now it can burn at 4X DL and burn quality on cheap discs is awesome
I have all kinds of "B" codes on my drive (Benq 1620) - is that the right code for the 4x flash? Check out Tiger Direct - I bought it at the Tiger store in Raleigh for $79.99 - $20 MIR (have had pretty decent luck with Tiger Rebates - takes about 6-8 weeks). Supposedly you can get it in black, beige, or even silver.
Great drive! If you plan on putting it in an external enclosure make sure you get a firewire enclosure as this drive has alot of problems with USB enclosures. I learned this from personal experience with my IOMagic/Benq drive from Staples. The CDFreaks Benq forum has a long thread on problems with the Benq 1620 and external enclosures. However, this drive rocks as an internal drive! The automatic bookmark setting and the beige and black faceplates (at least with the IOMagic drive) were nice.
