this drive is really, really quiet too compared to 3500/3520. Highly recommended. You may also be able to save some money if you buy the "Nu 163" which is a BenQ 1620 rebadge. You can flash the "Nu" version rebadge to a genuine retail BenQ 1620 Pro.

This is a good deal. Maybe I was to quick to judge the Egg for having no real deals. Anybody know anything about the quality and reliability of this Benq 1620 Pro?

I read that it couldn't write to a lot of low-quality/cheap dvd-r's. Correct me if my information is wrong.

Pretty sure you're right Techmasta2.

On the other hand, with decent media, it's great. AND it supports bitsetting out of the box.

I have the beige version. It's quiet and fast.
I was using a Pioneer 16x slot loader for "ripping/reading" and the BenQ for burning. The Pioneer was very nice, back in the day.
But the best DVD copy setup I've found is an LG 4163 DL burner for "ripping/reading" and the BenQ 1620 for burning.
I tried using the LG for burning and the BenQ for reading, but that setup was about 2-3 minutes slower using the same disk.

I picked up a BenQ 1620 (Pacific Digital rebadge that I flashed to the latest offical firmware) several weeks ago. It is now giving me some DVD write problems and CD reading problems. Both intermitten.

There are several CDFreaks threads going on other people having problems with the newer 1620s. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=126514 is a thread started to track problems. BE WARNED IF YOU DON'T HAVE A POPUP BLOCKER, YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO CLICK THE LINK.

Newegg has the beige retail version of the BenQ DW1620 is on sale ending 2/22/2005 5:30 PM PST (for those with beige cases, though a black face plate is included) for $66.99 - $5 instant rebate - $10 mail-in rebate = $51.99 +tax with free shipping here

The black OEM 1620 PRO is up to $55.99 +tax with free shipping. Anyone know the difference between a pro and non-pro 1620?

The Pro version comes with newer firmware which allows 4x dual-layer recording, versus 2.4x speed on the non-pro version. The latest versions of the firmware are freely available on their web site at no charge. Any drive you buy, the first thing you should do is flash it to the latest firmware, so in effect, there is no difference.

My favorite media for it is Ridata DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPN) which can be written at 8x speed. There is a very long thread at cdfreaks on media that people have tested with the drive so you can see what DVD-R media has performed well with the drive. There is also a Burn Quality Hall of Fame.

If you update to the latest firmware then there's no diff at all between them, they become the same drive then.
Deff one of the best burners , if not THE best burner on the market right now !

I've noticed that thread too. So I'm having trouble deciding whether to jump or to go with the 3520a instead. Anyone got their 1620 from newegg yet? Any problems with it?

Thanks

Got one last week, and I'm still evaluating the quality. I used Nero's CD-DVD Speed Quality check and DVDinfoPro, and PI and PIF errors are relatively low, much lower than the Pioneer 108. But, the ratio between the errors somehow means the quality is pretty close between the 1620 and 108. Its hard to tell what is a good/great/crap burn by looking at just numbers, but so far the 1620 seems solid.

I just received mine today from Newegg but haven't installed yet. What media are you using Shlong for your successful burns? Did you install yours on the second ide controller with a cd or dvd rom? Also did you use a 40 or 80 wire cable to connect them? As you can tell this is my first install of a dvd writer. Also I read in one of the threads that the shorter 18 inch cable is better for transmitting data than the longer 24 inch. Can anyone help on these install questions? Thanks.

I'm using this media: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-132-808&DEPA=0

I'm on the secondary IDE channel as slave & another regular 16x dvd drive as the master. I'm using 80 wire cable.
