I just bought a 1620 from Newegg after hearing all the good press. Lightning fast shipping from Newegg, but unfortunately the drive was DOA and I had to RMA it to BenQ (didn't bother going thru Newegg). The process was pretty painless. Their techs walked me thru the standard troubleshooting and then e-mailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label to return it. That's pretty good service if you ask me.

Has anyone figured out how to get in on this deal? The promo code is not working. I've emailed their newsletter group but no response as of yet. When I hear back I will post a status update.

Ok guys I need help deciding between this BENQ drive and the NEC drive on newegg. WHich one is a better deal. Also i couldnt get the newanand1 code to work for NEC drive. Has anyone got that working?

Thanks a bunch

That was the dilemma I was in. I decided to buy the Benq only because the MicroCenter around here carried it, and I didn't feel like waiting for shipping. I heard good things about both drives in terms of performance, so I went with the Benq.

Smokin Gunn,

THanks for pointing that out. In that case BENQ seems to be the better option at 50$ instead of 56$ for NEC.

Ok to add to the fun. Microcenter has the Maddog(prolly NEC) external USB2 DVD RW drive for 45 (after rebate).

I am guessing i would need a USB 2.0 card to make that work. Is that right?

anyone know which drive reads better? i have an older nec and it wouldn't read some of the discs. But when I pop the same disc in my samsung drive, no problems at all.

thanks

I tried ordering two for my main rig. Turns out there is a limit of a single promo code, even if you have two orders. Still a better deal than two for full price.

At least the promo code works now...

There is a lot of info here on read/write quality, riplock, firmware, hacked firmware, etc. Some people (with too much money on their hands) use two drives since the one that?s best at reading may not be the best for writing.

Newegg never stops amazing me.

A couple of days ago I sent an email to the newsletter department because the $5.50 promo code wasn't working. Later in the day I tried again and it worked but it would only let me buy one with the promo price. So I ordered one then tried to order a second one a few minutes later with the code. It wouldn't let me so I just ordered one at the full price (which was a good price anyway.)

I just got a call a few minutes ago (wondering how they got my number) and they are going to discount the second drive because of the inconvenience of the code not working properly at the beginning.

Go Newegg!
