Benefits of having lettuce in your diet?

I'm a little confused, and I don't have my biology text on hand, so maybe you could help me out.

First, all plants have cell walls made of cellulose right, that humans can't really break down.

So how are things like grains, vegetables, fruits, etc, even broken down so that we take nutrients from them? (can we break them down, but just not very efficiently or fully?)

The second part of my question is, what are the benefits of eating different kinds of lettuce and other various forms of foliage?

1) You break many of the walls while preparing (cutting/tearing) and chewing.
2) Fiber is vastly underrated.

But no, lettuce overall does not have a lot of nutrients (especially iceberg lettuce). Eat it since it fills you up without going to your thighs. Heck as it passes through you, it'll take a bunch of fat and sugar from nearby food particles through you as well so you don't absorb them either.
