Benefits of 1.5gb of RAM over 1gb?

Hi all, have a quick question. On what is a pure gaming machine for the most part, will 1.5gb of DDR400 ram gain me much over 1gb? Will I see much of a performance gain in, say, Doom 3? Any help you all could give would be appreciated, thanks.

3.0ghz P4-HT
1gb DDR400 RAM
ATI Radeon 9600
Windows XP

Yeah, I kinda figured it wouldn't help much. As for a video card upgrade, I'm waiting on the 6600 AGP cards to hit the market. Dont really feel like upgrading my mb just to be able to buy a PCI-e.

Even a (relatively) cheap 9800 Pro would be an instant doubling in performance with that card. I'm kinda in the same boat- fairly decent rig, but don't want to change most of it to use the newer PCIe cards.
