Try squats if you aren't currently doing them. You'll probably like them more than bench.

haven't tried it yet. ok i'll try that as well.

Make sure you have correct form, and start light.

When you pull your arms back you should notice some muscle bunching up at the top of your armpits on your back. The barbell sorta rests on top of that...it's certainly below the neck.

I never lifted when I was in high school. My senior year I think I was like 5'9" and 130. could do 55 pushups in 2 min. Now I at 135lbs can do 98 push-ups in 2min (pt test in the army ) I usualy don't work out with any weights which most people don't realize you can got a good work out with out them. If you do have them then you can vary your exercises even more. Rember its not always the max weight that counts I know guys that can't bench 175 but can do 300 push-ups. But with exercise you also have to watch your diet. Protien is best like chicken, fish are good.

heh, i can bench 275 and can only do 65 pushups in a row

That's around what I can do.. I have strong forearms from mountain biking, but my bench press abilities are not as good. Leg press is also something I can dominate at, but again that's just from what I do most 😛

I'm all upper body I haven't tried to see what I can leg press yet but the last time I was at the gym I think i benched 210. But I'm still skin and bones.

how much do you weigh, how tall are you?

Actually, I haven't benched in a while, but when I was a few years younger, like 20-23 during college, I was going from 125-150's.

I am 6'2", 175lbs.

45 but there are sissy bars of 30 in the gym, be careful when you start bragging about how much stronger you are that day 😀

oh man. u guys are bringing me down faster than the hindenberg. 🙁

I know high school juniors who can bench more than that. Did that help? 🙂
Im a sophmore and I do more :thumbsup:

as am i. I started this year and can bench sets of 150
and max out at 200 flat.

oh and i'm 6'3 165 pounds, but i'm trying to put on weight 😀

Ugh... I've been working out very consistently for 3 years and the bench press is my absolute WORST exercise. The rest of my totals I'm pretty darn proud of myself for achieving.

Which total doesn't fit?
Squat = 275 x 8
Deadlift = 400 x 6
Bench Press = 175 x 4

I've done SO MUCH research, asked for so much advice. I'll never give up, it will never leave my workout, but I'm beginning to resign myself to the idea I may just have a weak chest. What's odd is that my pecs do actually continue to grow. They just don't get stronger. 😛

EDIT: I'm 6'1", 195lbs.

I've seen a lot of people at the gym lifting with terrible form - guys doing seated rows at the cable column with the entire stack of weight plus 2-100lb plates on it - but they're pushing with their legs when they pull back. I see lots of guys bouncing the weight off their chest doing bench press doing super-fast reps.

I did 185 twelve times once doing reps that were 4 seconds down, 1 second pause, then back up again. I've not been able to do that again, usually it's 8 reps or so before I can't do any more.

Having a spotter helps a ton. It's nice to have someone there to force you through reps and help do negative-only's when you get tired.
