What? You download movies? Isn't that illegal?

I hope pirates like you get busted and arrested and thrown in jail.

You should PURCHASE your DVD's. Just because you have broadband doesn't give you the license to download software, Mp3's, or movies buddy.

We here at ATOT don't do these things, and neither should you!

Just as American plans to invade Iraq were hitting high gear, scraping together armed forces, active and reserves, to make a powerful fighting force to take Baghdad, what should happen? North Korea springs into action against the United States and the United Nations.

Grossly distorted chronology . . . threats and plans to invade Iraq have been in full swing for quite some time. The public notice about North Korea started in October.

Pyongyang defies U.N. agreements about restricting nuclear technology, brings forbidden weapons into the DMZ, threatens nuclear attack against the U.S. and our allies in the region.

From their October admission to the present North Korea has not threatened unprovoked hostility towards the US or any US ally. Bush has made clear the US reserves the right to pre-emptively strike against any sovereign . . . and he placed North Korea near the top of the list. It is true that NK is currently in violation of several UN resolutions and has repeatedly placed black listed weaponry in the DMZ. It is also true that official US policy endorses the hypothetical use of nuclear weapons against conventional forces and WMD nations not to mention possible use as a first strike option.

If there is even a slightly good chance that the Communist North will attack South Korea or use nuclear weapons even in a test, the U.S. will have to split up our already too-thin forces between Iraq and faraway Korea. This drastically complicates our ability to concentrate forces against Saddam.

Let's face facts . . . our war strategy is based on overwelming force which decapitates the Iraqi war machine and intimidates the rank and file. In the aftermath, the US will occupy Iraq for an indeterminant period. North Korea will not invade the South without provocation. China and Russia are committed to avoiding war on the peninsula. The ultimate arbiters for peace on the Korean peninsula will be China, Russia, South Korea, and North Korea. Contrary to Ben Whine's assertions if 200K+ troops are required to secure Iraq the operation by definition will likely be a failure. The 38K US troops in South Korea are not the primary defense for the country. It is the 700K Korean troops. The North Koreans will be routed in an armed conflict but not b/c the US military rides to the rescue but b/c South Korea has better weapons and better training. Regardless, northern SK will be in shambles, Seoul will be decimated, and Korea will take decades to recover.

Stein's third full paragraph includes . . . possibly, possibly, possible, presumably, possibility . . . such powers of analysis should be lauded the world over.

We have far fewer armed forces personnel, ships, and aircraft than we did eleven years ago.
Hmm, maybe the world was very different 11 years ago. Maybe people left the armed forces for better paying jobs in the civilian sector . . . you know the one that drives the US economy. Maybe technology has improved to the point that ships and aircraft provide substantially greater firepower hence fewer are needed.

We should have enough military so that we could fight in Korea without having to go nuclear right away.
Again only an idiot or the ignorant wants to fight in Korea. Conflict may be unavoidable but in the absence of good faith (on our part) discussions the necessity of overwelming military force becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Furthermore, a war-suffcient US presence on the Korean peninsula would require the de facto occupation of South Korea. The South Koreans would only agree to such a scenario under extreme duress. Oh and anybody planning to consult China to allow invasion of NK from the border?!

Stein is knowledgeable enough to include the reference to nuclear weapons b/c IF NK forces made a push into SK the ONLY way we could stop initial advances would be tactical nukes on their forward positions. Much like Pakistan and India . . . Pakistan has to use nukes b/c that's the ONLY way they could defeat superior conventional forces.

In summary, we cannot put any troops in China. We cannot put sufficient troops in South Korea. Funding is not the problem. Geopolitical considerations far outweigh financial issues.

Now, let's grit our teeth and pay for the defense we need ... starting with decent pay for our armed forces.
Now that's an intelligent statement . . . he should finish with . . . stop wasting money on pipe dreams and boondoggles like NMD and V-22.

People get too dependant on govt programs that get started by Liberals, and now can't live without them. govt gets involved in spending $$ on stuff it's got no business in. But we can't cut a single dime becuase "what about all the people.. whaaaaa...".. screw them.. get a job, get money and get a life other than my 40% the govt takes.

They could probably take less than that if we spent $$ on defence and BASICs.. My philosophy.. If you didn't earn anything, you don't get anything. Be productive or be GONE>

A smart guy to be sure, but to get elected in the USA doesn't take brains. It takes a closet that's either skeleton-free or one with the skeletons so well buried that they can't get found before the election. It also take a certain kind of charisma and dynamic speaking. While Stein might be better suited to the task of leading the country than most of the Bozos that run, he's entirely unelectable. He doesn't have the right look, the right style or the right past. He's smart but dull, has a wry sense of humor that'll be over the head of the average voter, has spent too much time sex-bantering with Nancy Pimental on Win Ben Stein's money and he's tied to Nixon. He couldn't get elected treasurer of the local Rotarians. Too bad though, I'd vote for him.

I'd agree, but G.W. Bush is president, throws your theory right out the window...

Heh, Ben Stein was on some late night show a while ago saying how he was friends with Bush and supported his decisions. Personally I think Bush is a lot smarter than we give him credit for. And I would vote for Ben Stein as well, but since most voters wouldn't know a good candidate if he hit them in the face, he would never get elected.

1. "public" notice? G men have know about this for over a year. just cause we didn't know doesn't mean anything.. And SO what? NK is the rattler here.. G.W. dind't just say.. ."ya know Dick.. I really wanna go back to a fvcked up peninsula and start a war.. yeah that's it..."
NK did not run around saying "hey we got nukes, we got nukes" until the special envoy 'confronted' NK. The NK response, "so whatcha gonna do about it big boy?" To which GWB said, "well we're just gonna continue to not talk to you . . . so there!"

Do a web search on Bush Doctrine . . . go to the WSJ, TownHall, etc. Bush's theme is Peace through overwelming military might. Such policy could work if the goal was to rule the Western Hemisphere. Unfortunately, most of the world's black gold percolates from the Middle East and the real big dog in Asia is China. Even though NK was necessary to get enough countries for Bush's Axis of Evil he never intended to fight . . . well at least not anymore.
But today in Washington, the Bush administration suggested that the pressure would be accompanied by diplomatic engagement. The State Department spokesman, Philip Reeker, said the administration was "prepared to pursue a bold dialogue aimed at having a better relationship with North Korea."

2. NK is breaking resolutions?? Sounds familiar.. who else is doing something like that.. hmm.. let me see...
Let's be clear on this resolution thing. UN resolutions matter if WE care. If the US doesn't care then no harm no foul. The only reason we are not the primary resolution-breaker is b/c we can block resolutions we don't like . . . or abstain in the case of Israel. The above does not in any way excuse NK's behavior. Rogue state is an appropriate description. I'm just saying the rogue and the noble have a lot in common.
3. 700k troops better armed.. huh?? I guess none of that USA cold war money went there EQUIPING THEM AND TRAINING THEM!!! (Yeah, we suc.. bad USA, bad USA...)
Have you ever been close to the DMZ? Have you ever been to South Korea? Korea has compulsory military/police service for eligible men. Korea spends 2.8% of its GDP on defense. It's GDP is greater than 30x that of the North which has approximately 1 million men. You know what that produces . . . better armed and better trained South. Considering the World Food Program has cut assistance by 50% this year I imagine their million man Army will be quite fit and ready to fight.
rolleye.gif

4. You critizise Ben's third full paragraph includes . . . possibly, possibly, possible, presumably, possibility . . . such powers of analysis should be lauded the world over..

YOUR NEXT PARAGRAPH is 3 "maybe"s!!!!! sheez....
Get a clue, Dude. Stein was making a logical argument which REQUIRED a string of hypotheticals. Accordingly, any single error makes his argument specious at best.

As for my statement . . .Hmm, maybe the world was very different 11 years ago. Maybe people left the armed forces for better paying jobs in the civilian sector . . . you know the one that drives the US economy. Maybe technology has improved to the point that ships and aircraft provide substantially greater firepower hence fewer are needed.

I'm older than 11 and remember a lot about 1991. I would be inclined to say the world was different . . . maybe not very different so I guess you've got me on a technicality.

Some people left the armed forces b/c they wanted more time with their families, some disliked the work, some couldn't cut it but almost every single man and woman of intellect with marketable skills was all but guaranteed a better quality of life in the private sector in the 90s.

Well the DOD Secretary and Chairman of Joint Chiefs think we pack more of a punch than 1991 due primarily to advances in technology and training. . . but what the hell do they know.

5. So, let them send missle technology to terrorists, build nukes (that terrorists would pay big for). and just forget the whole thing.. I hear lots of positioning, and no answers....
It's called a slow yet progressive march towards entering the 20th century . . . for North Korea. SK is quite compassionate but China is the absolute lifeline for NK. China will handle business on the peninsula b/c China has got skillz . . . plus if NK fudged around there wouldn't be any strong silent treatment from Beijing.

Apparently we are not all that concerned about proliferation b/c we continue to allow missile shipments. Pakistan is the pre-eminent world threat to distribute missile technology and nukes to terrorists.

Your indignation might work if you had a clue or you were sincere. Ultimately, we've got to work with China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan to coax North Korea with a whole lot of carrots. It is not rewarding bad behavior b/c NK's argument is that they have to shout in order to be heard . . . kinda like a child's tantrum.

March 2002 BBC Asia
The US and South Korea have launched major military exercises, in a move condemned by North Korea as a declaration of war.

Thousands of troops are involved in the week-long exercise, which will simulate a conflict with the communist North.

The government in Pyongyang is furious at being labelled part of an "axis of evil" by US President George W Bush.

It said the drills were preparations to launch a "nuclear holocaust" on the Korean peninsula, following recent news reports that the US was prepared to use nuclear weapons against seven countries, including North Korea.

The drills involve 18,000 US troops based in South Korea and a small number of troops from bases in Japan, Guam and the US. About 315,000 South Korean soldiers are taking part.

North Korea has so far rejected a US offer for unconditional talks, believing too many strings will be attached to aid and other help.

Now I've never heard that line before. I wonder if it's true that the Bush administration was pursuing unconditional talks with North Korea during early 2002?

And yes I did MEAN bring North Korea into the 20th century.

Yeah an envoy said "we got a defector who told us, we got tons of survailence, now come clean".. the answer was this mess. If Clinton followed through withthe 2 light water reactors fast enough "maybe" this wouldn't have gotten this far.. but it did..

I also don't think that breaking resolutions is a "if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound" argument. Somebody cares.. I am sure SK is not going "Sure, please build nukes and break rules....."

I am also not saying SK didn't get strong by itself, but there was a lot of good money poured into their economy 30-40 years ago to help out. A certain Jewish nation has compulsory service too, and they are amoung the best, as I am sure SK is.. Not saying they suc.. just appreciate the help growing up...

As far as our strength goes.... Clinton gutted military budgets, yes people left, but new people are supposed to come in. You can't put tanks on the ground if there isn't any $$ to pay for them.

Please don't assume I am 11, or that I lack sincerity.. I have been watching this for over 5 years now just waiting/fearing something will spark up. I like hearing your viewpoint.. I guess I need more smiley faces in my posts.... (or maybe [/Sracasm....sarcasm/])

Iraq already has WMD's just not nukes. They have bio and chemical weapons. Its also a possibility if they are able to get enriched uranium, they could have a nuke rather quickly. Lets also not forget the fact, Iraq lost Desert Storm and signed an agreement with the UN, that they have broke repeatedly. We've gone through diplomatic channels with Iraq for 11 years.

Give me several years to hide any trace of my crime and an army of investigators won't find a thing, either.
