Umm, you are just finding out about this? Affleck has been confirmed as Jack Ryan for a long time now. Christ the movie comes out pretty soon. You are soooooooooooo out of the loop.

And what happened to Matt Damon? Umm, let's see, to me it seems like he chooses roles that are less likely to be huge blockbusters but more likely to show off acting talent and have a strong script. His new movie coming out, The Bourne Identity, looks really cool. He knows Kung Fu.

He was in Ocean's Eleven, Legend of Bagger Vance, Talented Mr. Ripley, Dogma, Saving Private Ryan, Rounders. Jeez, he is gone, how does he still find work? NFS4 I lost all respect for your movie knowledge with this thread. Anytime you ever talk about a movie again you should be punched in the eye, THE EYE I SAY, THE EYE!

EDIT: Matt Damon must be poor and dying now because he isn't making Ben Affleck movies; you sicken me. Affleck is Daredevil too. Do you hear me? DAREDEVIL!

<<He's way too young to make a pres. that sounds ghey.>>

I'm not sure you know too much about this movie. I know next to nothing about Jack Ryan but I know for sure that he is not the President in this movie. He would be too young for a president, but since he's not playing the president it doesn't really matter. I'm glad that you have based your entire view of this movie on WRONG INFORMATION. Damn, you are dumb too and you should be punched in the EYE, IN THE EYE I SAY, RIGHT IN THE EYE! BOOYAH!

First off, I wasn't the ONLY one in this thread that didn't know that Affleck was playing the lead role, so please...spare me your antics.

Do you think that I care what someone (who I will never meet) on an internet board thinks about my opinions on movies? Hell no I don't :D Did I ever say that I knew everything about movies? I don't think I did. And I don't recall naming myself an expert at all. Go in the corner and play with your toys now!!

GEEZ, you people take this stuff too seriously. It's not like someone attacked you yet you come out with personal assaults. How kind of you :disgust:

Bwahahha.
First off, the movie is changed so badly from the book. Atleast Denver is the city that gets nuked.
There is so many changes that I wont point out but if you read the book you know its bs.

I didn't base my entire movie on it. They can place you as leading role and I'll probably see the next clancy movie, so that says a lot.

<< I'm not sure you know too much about this movie. I know next to nothing about Jack Ryan >>

That makes two of us eh, champ?

Last Clancy book I read jack ryan was president. I was making an ASS[that's you]sumption that this movie would be based on one of his later books where Ryan was president. I'm Sooooooooooo sorry I upset you though. I really am.

Nope. It's Baltimore.

The name of the book, Skoorb, is The Sum of All Fears. In it, an Israeli nuclear bomb lost during the 1972 war is recovered by Syrian (Muslim) terrorists, then rebuilt with the assistance of American Indian Movement terrorists, the Syrians, and German Communist terrorists. They don't fix it quite right, and it's a dud, but still destroys the Super Bowl and much of downtown Denver. It's more of a cerebral than action story, where Jack Ryan has to prevent the Preisdent of the US from unleashing WW3 on the Russians after the nuclear explosion is detected. Like anything Clancy, a great book, but not well adapted to the screen.

To simplify the plot to fit it into a two hour movie, the three factions of terrorists were replaced by Chechens, who hope to start a war between the US and Russia by blowing up the Super Bowl. The nuke is stolen from a Russian depot. It's also been said that the Muslim and Native American terrorists were removed from the plot because of the potential of protests by those groups. The movie was delayed by September 11, I think it was supposed to come out at Thanksgiving. Unfortunately as we all now know, Muslim terrorists would have been a lot more realistic than the Chechens, but oh well, such is Hollywood. The Chechens don't have an anti-defamation league like the Muslims so they are easily made into movie bad guys. ;)

Yeah, Ben Affleck is in it. He's a decent actor IMO, but if Clancy likes him I'll give him a chance. Morgan Freeman and James Cromwell are also both in it, so it should be very good.

That sounds pretty cool. The Clancy book i read end of last year was the bear and the dragon. It was 1000 pages and in some ways not much happened but at the same time a lot did. There was a decent bit of combat at the end but most of the book was political intrigue I guess you'd say. It was actually the first Clancy book I'd read and I enjoyed every page!

Yeah, Bear and the Dragon was great. You learned a lot about Chinese culture, and you can bank on it being accurate because Clancy's research is second to none. The guy got debriefed by the CIA when he figured out classified information by doing some math, for pete's sake.

Baltimore...NO!!!! That's my hometown :D Anyway, Freeman and Cromwell are excellent actors. I'm still going to see it though. I just didn't find Patriot Games or Clear and Present Danger all that enjoyable...but they were STILL good movies though.

I really think the best place for a Clancy adaption would be a mini-series. His stuff is too complicated and long to condense into a 2-hour movie with any quality. Clear and Present Danger was okay, but the book was so much better. I did like Willem Dafoe as Clark, though.

Afleck isn't that bad. I thought he was great in changing lanes. Although I dunno if he's a good badass sorta type. That's what Jack Ryan is right? Never seen any of the movies or read the books. I should start, I like that kinda stuff.

I liked Alec Baldwin in Red Oktober :). There were alot of great actors in that movie, but there was one problem... Sean Connery was so goddamn awesome that he completely eclipsed the other actors!

They're doing the wrong book although currently topical.
They should have done "Red Storm Rising". That would be a tough book to do justice to in 2.5 hours.

I've got a question...if this is supposed to be a "young" Ryan, then why do they use modern technology/vehicles/computers in the trailer? I'm know I'm being picky, but I just thought of that :D

Seems to me Clancy's books have always been more about the technology rather than the characters.
TSOAF is one of his least technological books, other than the nano second by nano second description of a nuclear detonation.
That was the best part of the book IMHO. It'll probably get cut in the movie.

Hmm I read three of my grandfather's Clancy books when I was like 13. Started with Patriot Games, which I liked a lot, then Clear and Present Danger. That was by far my favorite of the Clancy books. I then started Sum of All Fears and I got like halfway through before I was bored out of my mind. I've since read two more, I forgot the names. One where a Japanese pilot kamikazes a joint session of congress and Ryan becomes president. I forget what the other one is.

I saw Clear and Present Danger and, while I thought it was a decent movie, I thought it took a good book and essentially ruined it. Then again, when I saw the movie, it had been a long time since I had read the book, so maybe I was forgetting something.

Anyway, I saw the trailer for SoAF and I thought it looked like a good movie. Ironically, it may turn out to be a better movie adaptation of a Clancy book than Clear and Present Danger even though CaPD is, theoretically, a better-adaptable book than SoAF.

From the trailer (from this thread) it looked like Ben Affleck did a good job. I think it works out since this is one of the earlier books. Not the very earliest, since they've already been made into movies :) but oh well. He's old enough. Give him a chance! :D

P.S. In which book is Clark in a foreign country (I think Japan) and he uses a computer modem's "fuzz" static to communicate secret messages, since he knew they'd be listening to the rest of the transmission? That was so cool! Is that possible? I guess for the CIA anything is possible :D

I am a big fan of Tom Clancy, but it just looks like they butchered The Sum of All Fears.

Even if they couldn't have scored Harrison Ford to play Jack Ryan, for the love of God they could have at least got somebody besides Ben Affleck. And, it looks like they totally changed Dr. Ryan's character as well. He looks as if he is some chump intern in the previews.

But, I suppose I will be there on opening night to watch it.

I think Without Remorse would be an excellent book to adapt to the screen. Obviously I'm a Punisher fan  and in the book Clark basically becomes the Punisher! I also enjoyed learning about who he really is(John Kelly) and how he came to be Mr. Clark. Also the action would play out great and no one has a problem with drug dealers getting wacked ;)
