Bell Canada tells staff to downplay new $25 basic TV package ordered by CRTC

B(H)ell Canada is directing sales staff not to promote its new basic $24.95 "Starter" TV package, according to a recent internal training document obtained by CBC News. The "Starter" pack will be unveiled Sunday, the document indicates. By March 1, to comply with new CRTC rules, all TV service providers must offer a "skinny" basic package costing no more than $25 a month, plus additional pick-and-pay channels.
The Bell document also shows that add-ons to the basic "Starter" pack can become so costly that what was supposed to be a good deal for Canadians could wind up, in some cases, costing more than their current cable bill.

No surprise. Have to take a look at this though; I'm hoping to just grab some sports channels.

Check out the leaked Rogers package for a laugh... You have to pay $18 for some Sportsnet channels and another $18 for the TSN channels.

I thought I could save $23/month but forgot about a couple CNN shows and suddenly, it's not worth it anymore.

Ugh, what a joke. I really only watch the NFL anyway, so I guess I should just kill everything and buy the NFL package once a year.

It's great to see a la carte but they need to regulate it better. Like there should be a max price per channel, and a max overall bill.

I disagree. Let then charge whatever they want. Soon they will have to scutter channels because it is not meeting revenue targets :awe:

I'm conflicted about that. While a la carte is great for the customer, it probably will kill a lot of channels that are marginal -- not quite profitable but with a small subsidy from a well off channel, it is occasionally watchable and employs a bunch of people.

I think cable is one of the best deals out there in terms of entertainment. At $80/month and with a PVR, it's as much entertainment as you can possibly consume per month. Compare that to about $15 for a 1-2 hour movie, or a night out for $40, or 8 bottles of cheap wine.

I can't remeber watching anything on satellite lately. I was cord free but wife wanted it back... grrr 100 a month.

remember when 2 year billing was going to be great and the canadian mobile carriers fucked you even harder?

this is that.

thank fuck pay per use billing internet died.

can only imagine a 1 dollar a gigabyte charge.

^^^So, 10 custom channels for $37 + $25 basic = $62 while a full package of 100+ channels is about ~$75. And you probably get a free digital cable box rental for $75.

This works great for people who just want "multicultural" channels.

How nice of the government to tell private companies what packages they have to offer.

When there are only a few private tv companies the govt has to step in to force them to offer basic packages otherwise market failure will occur. And thats not a good thing for something as important as the news.
