Belkin USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter $19.99 after rebate at Office Max

Office Max has this adapter for 39.99 - 10.00 instant rebate - 10.00 mail-in rebate = 19.99.

I went into my local OM to get one of these for when I work on people's machines that have only modems so I can hook it up to my network and internet. Anyhow, the shelf tags
said 19.99 after instant rebate. It said nothing about a mail-in rebate.

I bought one and it rung up 29.99. I said WTF! He showed me the ad which stated the MIR. I said the sign over there says 19.99 after instant rebate. He went to look at it and said I was right. I brought it home for 19.99 and picked the 10.00 rebate coupon off the OM website.

9.99 is an even better price

How can they get away with calling these things 10/100?
Due to USB limitation, the most you can get is about 10BT speed, on a good day, downhill, with a tailwind.
I bought one when Dell had them for $8.00, and it does work well. But it is slow.

I believe the reason why they call it a 10/100 interface card is because it conforms to the 100 megabit standard. Can't reference the standard off the top of my head, but that's how it is. I'm sure there are MANY 10/100 PCI network cards that cant even hit 100mbit, but they're still called 10/100 nics

I could see if these things were close, but USB standard (from USB.org) is max 12Mbits/s.
That is MAX. In reality, real world numbers are closer to 50% - 80% max.
So you end up with an Ethernet adaptor running 6Mbits/s to 9.6Mbits/s.
After tinkering with mine for a while, best I could get was 7.25Mbits/s. Normal 10/100 card gets 10x that speed.
If it soundslike 10bt, and runs like 10bt, then they should at least call it as it runs.

Many think that since it says 10/100, it will run the same as their desktops PCI 10/100 NIC.
Very misleading. And wrong.
