but the last time the electricity went out it didnt have any juice to give me time to shutdown! so i'm guessing either the battery is old/dead or just really low.

The UPS is on 24/7 but i assumed it charged itself during use - It doesn't say anywhere how to keep the battery charged so i was wondering if anybody out there has any insight on this UPS.

Are you sure it's actually on? My Belkin has an off button though I can't remember whether that disables passing through power.

Also mine has a couple of surge-only outlets, make sure you aren't plugged into either of those.

If none of the above, the battery is probably dead and needs to be replaced.
 
You also need to consider the load you are putting on the UPS.
According to the user's manual for that unit (here on the second page under "Technical Specifications), you can see that it is rated for only 190W!
What have you plugged in? If you have plugged in the monitor, what is the power consumption of it? You can find that by looking in the user's manual of the monitor. What is the power draw of your PC?

Under the same section, you can see that the backup time is specified to be "up to 15 minutes"! This is the worst way to spec a UPS. A decent UPS has a run time chart like this. You can see what the run time is as a function of the load.
But, since yours says "up to 15 minutes, we can only assume that it means that it will run for 15 minutes if it is loaded with less than the maximum load. So, the question is how long it runs with the maximum load! An optimistic assumption is that 15 minutes is for a 50% load (90W)!

If I were you, I would call them up and ask them how long it is supposed to run with a 190W load. You can also disconnect your PC and monitor from the UPS and load it only with a 100W lamp and see how long it runs after you pull the plug of the UPS.

Basically, the UPS charges automatically when it is plugged in to the outlet as long as it is not overloaded.
 
Hi, You don't charge the battery. The UPS takes care of that any time it is plugged in and the AC is still on. Batteries do go bad. An easy way to get an idea of the battery is to unplug all loads, plug a lamp fixture in with a 100 watt bulb. Unplug the AC and time how long the light stays on. Three hours would indicate about a 300 watt UPS etc. Before you do it make sure the UPS has been plugged in at least 24 hrs. Luck, Jim

That is not necessarily true!
How long the UPS runs has nothing to do with its Wattage. It has only to do with the battery capacity. Think of a UPS that runs for 15 minutes. If you buy a larger battery for the same UPS, it will run longer.

You need to get a run time chart from the manufacturer to know how long the UPS is supposed to run on any load.
