I've had both the n50 and n52 and both have their strengths. The n52 has the better features due to the added keys and buttons and placement to some extent but the n50 keypad does have a better feel for doing quick and tight changing of directions. For instance in UT2k3 I could move in a tight circular pattern quicker than I could with the n52. Too much play in the keys. I also use the dpad up and down for jumping and crouching on both the n50 and n52. The n50 had a much better reaction time...again too much play.
For what it's worth I've forced myself to adapt to the n52 but when I've tried the n50 again which I still have, it still feels more responsive. I don't consider the n52 responsiveness to be bad at all but that the n50 is better than it in that regard.
I can also safely say that the comment on pushing a number of keys and it causing another key to seemingly activate is very true. I've seen this happen with both units. It's unfortunate but for it's not a killer. It really depends on the game you play and your style. If you're hitting a number of keys that often, you probably need to work on your skills as those moments are typically going to be in the heat of a very fast paced battle.
I bought my n52 at buy.com months ago for about the same price and it's been well worth it. I tell people that if they try these speedpads to try them for about 2 weeks to get a chance to get used to them. Playing with them is nothing like resting your hand on them in the store and I've known more than a few folks who have taken their speedpads back within a week of getting them because they couldn't get used to it. After 2-3 weeks I saw my play improve nicely.
