I was at Microcenter today and picked up a Belkin DSL/Cable Router with integrated 4-port switch for $9.99 + tax out the door, no rebates. Looks like the price is good for online orders as well. Link

shipping is $5.99 for online orders. Ugh! Wish there was a microcenter near where I live.

Maybe I'll try pricematching it at staples. they're selling it for $59.99. Only problem is that the one staples is selling is the newer model (F5D5231-4) versus the microcenter's (F5D5230T4). If they allow the pricematch, then the price would be $9.99 - $5 (110% guarantee) = $4.99.

Be aware that if it's Belkin, it's probably junk... of course, at these prices, I guess it's alright. 🙂

That Slashdot article was written by idiots. Some Belkin routers did have a one-time redirect where they offered you some Belkin sponsored service. I clicked on the "don't offer again" and it permanently went away. While this was a mistake by Belkin, my router has worked perfect since. The people complaining were the ones too stupid to click on the don't offer again option.

With every router you purchase you should obviously check and install firmware updates. Not just with Belkins. I've had this exact router, my sister still uses it, and it works fine (just make sure the firmware is the latest.) My current wireless Belkin also works just fine. Belkin usually has firmware updates and, shock of all shock, Belkin customer service actually responds to e-mail in a timely fashion.

agreed, Belkin makes quality stuff.

I don't agree, i've had a lot of problems with belkin. For a long time i was recommending belkin for home networks as the price was right, and they seemed to work ok. Unfortunately, their quality is horrible. One of those wireless belkin routers had a defective access point out of the box, i bought 5 belkin routers and 2 of them were DOA right out of the box, and one died the next day after i installed it. Two of them are working ok right now. But their quality assurance is horrible.

It's a personal preference by me, but i would never recommend them again. Get a netgear, or a usrobotics..

I have also had miserable experiences with Belkin routers.

I gotta call BS on the http redirect issue....

I suppose if you need a cheap router (now!) for home use, $10 is hard to resist...

but the idea of belkin putting an advertising redirect into firmware rubs me the wrong way, even if there are provisions to "opt-out". If they want to advertise, put a flyer in the box that says "visit www.whereever.com for special offers" -- but don't randomly alter the behavior of a router until i (or anyone else on my network) chooses to accept/decline the offer. Congratulations, belkin, you're now on my "do not buy" list.

I picked mine up at the store today and am using it now. There was at least 10 in the big ass bin they were in when I was at the store.

I bought a different model (F5D5231-4) of the belkin wired 4 port router. That one was $10 AR a few months back. For the price I guess one can't expect much, it does the job of NAT and login for my dsl. This was purchased to replace a linksys router I had spent $60 on back when there was no wireless and routers were expensive. (The linksys died from a power surge). My complaints:
1. The firewall on it has holes, there are 3 open ports in it that I did not put there. I checked the settings and reset it but no luck, and before anyone says it, I have the setting for it to check for firmware disabled. For my router, there is no new firmware upgrade either.
2. The router, has a nice interface, but is very lousy at storing any changes I make. Normally I have to go in and press accept twice after it claims to have accepted the change, and even restart it (manual unplug).
If it had been free AR I wouldn't have complained, but it is important for atleast a half decent firewall. If you just need something to get your internet connection working and run a lan, this will work just fine. But, if you need something for a small office, I'd recommend purchasing a more reliable product.
