Being Under Employed/Paid

Come July 1st my employer, the great state of kalifornia, will likely drop my pay to the Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Since I make substantially more than that, can I collect any kind of unemployment insurance?
We will get back pay when the budget gets passed but I'd really like to stick it to the man.
(ya, I know, good luck with that)

No, because you'll still be employed.

That may or may not be true....I know if you lose your job and are on unemployment and you take a new job that pays less unemployment may kick in some money to help make up the difference(For some set amount of time), rather or not it does that for a huge pay cut i don't know.

I'm guessing it varies state by state. In MD, if you got dropped back to part time, you'd get partial unemployment as long as you stayed below a certain threshold. I don't know how dropping pay, but keeping hours would work out.

Interesting question, actually. Where I live (socialist mecca of Canada) if you received a massive drop in pay or a really significant change of position - the kind designed to humiliate you into quitting - you'd have a pretty strong case for the courts in which you'd say you were effectively fired.

This is apparently called constructive dismissal/termination.

What do you do and why are they cutting your pay?
I work for Arnold Schwarzenegger and CA never passes a budget on time. If CA has no budget, the gov can pay us min wage. Fed min wage, not even CA min wage.

It goes along with my theory that most people are as dumb as a box of rocks.
And the ass has already furloughed us almost 15%. A very large portion of the jobs in Sacramento are state employee positions. There tax base is WAY down and lots of businesses have shit their doors. But arnie doesn't care. He feels that we should "Feel the pain" that the rest of the state is feeling from the recession.

Obligatory, "Gawd-dammed overpaid, underworked state employees!" :p

Ah-nold is the biggest joke as Governator since Jesse "The Body" Ventura...maybe worse.

The buffoon has NO clue about running anything except his mouth...which he does quite regularly with cute bits and lines from his movies. He just doesn't grasp the idea that things can't be as neatly scripted as a movie.

BTW, your comments that
most people are as dumb as a box of rocks.
Does a grave injustice to the box of rocks...

Unfortunately, in this particular matter, you can't just blame Ah-nold...it's also the morons in the state assembly who want to spend money we don't have on projects we don't need.

That sucks Olds.

Private sector options?

Do you get back pay once the budget is approved?

Sorry, but why shouldn't you? Why should the state, and the taxpayer, go into debt so you can be insulated from reality? You are a government worker, thus you are a dependent......dependent on the taxpayer. It businesses are shutting down and private sector jobs are being lost then there are not as many people to support your job. Why should the remaining people working bear a bigger burden so you don't have to suffer?

You need to get used to this crap, especially in CA. The government bubble is about to burst and many of you may simply be out of a job.

That money the assembly wants to spend is partially because the "box of rocks" voters in CA never meet a social proposition that they didn't like. All the time not understanding that someone (taxpayers) have to pay for it.

Olds,

Don't you work in the Highway Dept or some other municipal works field?

I have over 20 years and could retire in 4 years. Not that I will be able to. But that keeps me from looking into the private sector.
We will get back pay once the budget passes.

I am a taxpayer also. I also feel the pain because my wife was out of work for over a year.
I made a conscious decision to take a state job and be paid less so I would have a more secure future.
Also, none of my pay comes from the general fund. To reduce my pay when doing so has no effect on CA revenues is vindictive and asinine.
When the economy is doing great we don't get more pay or bonuses like the private sector. If I need to feel the pain I should also feel the joy, don't you think?

EDIT:
Also, the need for my services has not decreased. In fact, when the economy suffers, the need for state services actually rises.
And, CA is ranked 47th in state employees per citizen.

Agreed. The whole "govern by proposition" concept sux. The state constitution should be amended to say that any new law must also specify a clear revenue stream to fund it. Maybe we should start a petition...and get a proposition going...:p

I got myself a real job. It took a long time, a lot of effort, moving across the country. But I am paid for my work where I should be.

Very nice rebuttal. I see people repeat that talking point all the time.

I don't know if Arnie caused it, can't go around pointing fingers when I don't have proof. Often, the bike paths I go are on the corporate business streets. Can't help but notice a ton of them all over the place are closed or gone with leasing signs all over them.
