Being sent an 9800 GT instead of a 8800 512 GTS

My old GTS 640 was running at 91C and getting red lines in all my games.

The vendor said they would send me a 8800 512 GTS from which I can gather was a nice upgrade!

They emailed me today saying they were going to send me a 9800 GT instead but from what I can gather that is ever so slightly slower then an 8800 512 gts? concur?

Yes, an 9800 GT is a bit slower then 8800 GTS, but both of them are faster then your old GTS 640, so no harm done I guess.

9800GT is specification wise identical to the 8800GT except the purevideo additions and hybrid power on the 55nm versions. Gaming performance will be identical to the 8800GT.

I take it this card runs cooler then my old GTS ?

they will run about 70C under load from what i recall. 9800GT's still use the single slot cooler design of the 8800GT. however i believe the fan is a little bigger, which means more cooler and less noise 😀

yes, the 9800GT and 8800GT are EXACTLY identical, except for the pruevideo and hybrid sli someon listed above.

also, what someone didnt list above, is that it is compatible with 3 way SLi, while the 8800GT and 8800GTS 512 can only do 2. so you got a good replacement 🙂

the current hybrid versions are also 65nm. in fact there are no 55nm 9800gt in retail channel for now.

EDIT: lol weird coincidence that this just got posted over at Fudzilla

Not 55nm or 65nm chip related

We finally found out an interesting perspective on Hybrid power. Many have believed that Hybrid power is a feature of Geforce 9 cards and that its related to 55nm chips but it looks like it is an optional feature that add in board partner can enable even on 65nm versions of G92 chips.

We were informed that all 9800GT products regardless of process technology can have HybridPower support, if the vendor chooses to add the feature. It is up to partner to determine weather they want to implement it or not and currently we are not aware if adding Hybrid power costs AIB partner some additional money.

HybridPower is an optional feature that we made available with the introduction of 9800 GT products.

Can't go wrong with that card. Especially with the PureVideo included (NVidia should just include that for every card they make - I think they rip off a lot of their users, and it's one reason I finally went with ATI again, since their HD codec support is given for free). They did you a solid there.

Is it an EVGA? You should be able to trade up again in 90 days if you want!
